osX and strong supporters

lets bring it to X, it is by far the strongest GUI i see on the market right now. and with the unix "under the hood" it is the most stable OS i have ever run. i would love to support a chat client such as this if they brought it to X. mac peeps have $$$ (thats one reason we have macs) linux peeps like free ****-thus the reason for linux...

RE: osX and strong supporters

I have been using Odigo for some time on my Windows machine at work. They have never put any effort into a good Mac version. Now, they only have a bare-bones Java version available to the non-Windows crowd. I like Odigo better than all the other instant messengers, but I want something that really works on Mac OSX, and looks like it BELONGS on OSX.

By the way, OSX is the most beautiful OS I've ever seen.

RE: osX and strong supporters

Hey, I say port it to both OSX and Linux. People are porting linux apps to OSX left and right. WHY? Because it's supposed to be so easy(and has proven to be).

However, if you guys were to port it to OSX from Linux please do not rely on Xwindows. I, like many other mac veterans, don't have the time or patience to correctly install the multiple variants that are available(much less decipher which one won't muck up our systems).

**as a side note it would be sweet if you pulled a MicroSoft and made your OSX trillian app better than you Windows counterpart (like what they did with Office v. X).

**as a second side note, don't forget that the majority of *mac users are actually going to use your client*(we all know that the only thing that would be said over trillian on linux would start with "Hey, I was reading slashdot and....")

RE: osX and strong supporters

Please port it MacOS X. Your only current competitor for Trillian is Adium and Fire. Adium may be the best AIM clone out there but it don't have MSN, Yahoo, etc services which I need badly.

If you need any help on graphics part on Trillan for MacOS X, I would be more than glad to help you out :)

RE: osX and strong supporters

Wouldn't creating it for OS X first and then porting it to Linux be pretty easy considering Mac OS X is built on BSD?

OSX

OSX is the way to go more and more people are looking for alternatives to Windows and with OSX's hopefully soon to be utilised portability more people will be turning to it so really it makes more sense to make it for OSX. Another thing is I tried to vote but I got this "You have already voted,
Your last vote was not added to the results" I have not voted yet at all WTF is going on?

RE: osX and strong supporters

Well, I was going to reply with some insightful comments about Mac OS X, but apparently I have been selected to MAKE MONEY FROM HOME!!! Woo Hoo! Sucks to be all of you who didn't get selected.

RE: osX and strong supporters

Confirmed. Trillian should be ported to Mac OS X. I could just imagine having it on my dock...*daydreams*

RE: Wasn't Selected :(

Sadly, I wasn't selected to MAKE MONEY AT HOME. :(

No doubt a great offer on a scanner, color printer, and lots of green ink cartridges.

Damn that ad blocking software!

Another "Already Voted" that didn't

All the pro OS X stuff has been said. So I'll just say "ditto."

But I'll add that I too received the "You've already voted so this vote doesn't count" message. But I've not voted before.

I'm running OS X with Internet Explorer 5.1. I wonder how many more OS X voters got the same message but didn't notice it.

RE: osX and strong supporters

I think the strongest case for supporting OS X with Trillian can be found in the users.

First, the Mac is commanding an ever-growing share of the consumer computing marketplace. Sure, we don't compare to Windows (as of now), but the Mac and Linux are the best known competitors for Windows, and both have a large share.

That brings me to my second point. Since both OS X and Linux are a large portion of the OS market, which is preferable? As a company, you should consider your market. The Mac has recently become a huge platform for CONSUMERS. It's a well known fact that consumers are the ones who use chat services the most. Oh, sure, all of us techies -- including Linux-heads -- have tried (or still use) IRC, but the majority of people who use your program want to talk to their buds on AIM, Yahoo!, MSN, and the like. And those people are consumers. Linux just isn't a consumer-based OS yet, so it's very clear that the Mac is the OS of choice if you're going to develop for consumers. And if you're NOT going to develop for consumers, then ... well ... God pity your souls (and your profits).

There are some side notes that are certainly worth raising, though.

One is the simplicity with which OS X and Linux apps can be ported back and forth. Many apps often only need a recompile. While it wouldn't be so simple in this case, I'm sure, it seems like establishing a strong consumer base with Windows and Mac OS X before going on to Linux would be both very easy and very smart. (Another option would be to release the code under the GNU license for Linux users; you know they'll hack it to pieces anyway. ;-P)

Second, the Mac is a quickly growing and very viable platform. This sort of goes along with what I said earlier about consumers, but if you look at sales of Macs over the last couple years, you can see startling growth. While Linux has justly caused a lot of hype, the world just doesn't seem to be catching on as quickly as many had hoped. The Mac, on the other hand, is catching on wonderfully.

Why is it catching on? Because it is a beautiful, stable, and incredibly fast machine. Consumers like that. They don't like command-line interfaces (there's a REASON for Microsoft's frantic efforts to hide MS-DOS with Windows). And if you port Trillian to Mac OS X, they'll like that, too.

RE: osX and strong supporters

I'll give you the best reason to port to OS-X: money. People who can afford to purchase Macs either (A) get paid well for their talents, or (B) are willing to sacrifice other things to afford a Mac. Either way, those users are the ones who willingly send in shareware money when they find a worthy piece of software.

I obviously don't have any hard data to back up this claim, but if you think about it you'll see it makes sense. Ask Panic, or Stimpsoft, or any other of the number of Mac only shareware vendors and they'll tell you that Mac users are dedicated enthusiasts who are willing to pay a premium for good products.

I currently don't use chat apps, because I just don't have time for that sort of thing, but I have at least ten registered shareware apps on my machine, and I don't think I'm an anomaly in the Mac world.
