Trillian for OS X

Although OS X already has Fire, which does multiple IM, it would be good to have a competitor to ensure multiple IM works just right.
There are more people using OS X than any other unix, so it would make sense to go after more customers.

RE: Trillian for OS X

I'd also love to see Trillian for Mac OS X. Fire needs the competition!

RE: Trillian for OS X

I would love this program as it would allow me to communicate with the assimilated (AOL users) and the un-assimilated with one program.

RE: Trillian for OS X

I would love this for OS X (or a Java compatible version, but I'd rather OS X native). ICQ, while still useful as an alternative to the ghastly AIM client, is getting a bit long in the tooth... time to shake things up, I think.

RE: Trillian for OS X

I´ve got Windows on 9.1 running in the background just for Trillian, but the final Virtual PC port to X is not out yet.
The port to Linux and to X should be pretty much the same project anyway...

Trillian rules :)

RE: Trillian for OS X

See, the people running linux are saying the exact same thing, I love it on windows, wish i could use it in linux, plus they've been working on a linux port for some time so they should finish that then do an OS X port, in my opinion

RE: Trillian for OS X

HAHAHAHA! I envy you naive human!

"There are more people using OS X than any other unix, so it would make sense to go after more customers." <-- NO!? Think about it, imbecille, there are more UNIXes that you can count, and when you count them, and all the users of them, you'll see that you're damn wrong! IDIOT! I don't want to get personal here, but i did it anyway.

Trillian for OS X vs Linux

I've been playing with Trillian on Win2k. Not bad. I use Fire on OSX, and rather like it, but it is not yet bug free. On linux, I don't bother. Nothing worthwhile available as clients go. So, on that argument, perhaps Linux would be the best option... However, porting to OSX and Linux are two very different things. I'm the inter-OS porting guy at my company. Not my only hat, but my hat alone, and with some pretty complex products. I've done Linux, Solaris, OSX, Win32... and in the past, several others. The truth is, Linux gets you Solaris as well at virtually zero cost, and even with the other major UN*X platforms fading fast, that's no small deal. It also gets you a cheap and dirty port to any XonX enabled Mac at little cost, on gnome or KDE or Motif (*shudder*)... even if it does look terrible. On the flip side... nice as KDE is, if you can handle Objective-C++, a little playing with interface builder and project builder and you have one of the easiest GUI ports you've ever done. And if you stayed away from MFC for threads and sockets and the like, the underlayer should port from WindowsNT really easilly... just mind the radical differences in thread APIs, and remember that threads on windows have built in semaphores (critical sections) and that has to be reimplemented over pthreads or, if you're rewriting enough of the code, NSThread. Also note that there is a clean path from a Java port to a Cocoa native Java based application. Some of the GUI elements will differ, but the general result will require little work.

RE: Trillian for OS X

Linux and MAC OS X are cousins. They are both based on UNIX so making a MAC OS X version shouldn't be hard to make if a linux version is already made.

RE: Trillian for OS X

I really don't think that Fire really needs competition. Its open source, free, pretty fast paced releases, new features are common, as are refinements.

This is not to say that Trillian shouldn't come out for Mac OS X, heck, that would be great, choice is always a good thing.

But I don't think that it would really "compete" with Fire since the author is only writing it because people like it and he enjoys doing it.

RE: Trillian for OS X

My first complaint is with the voting here. I know 8 people including myself who tried to vote for osx and got a message saying they had already voted even though they hadn't. After i got the message i tried voting for palm just to see if it worked and whalla my vote was counted.

The message boards on the mac sites are full of these kinds of complaints about the voting here. This needs to be fixed ASAP, otherwise your poll doesnt mean anything.

As for a OSX competitor for fire. Personally I hate fire. So full of bugs its hardly functional. Also other than the lack of banners it does not seem to have any advantages over AOL IM.

I use Adium. By far the best messenger for any platform. Instead of just cloning the basic functions of AIM Adium actually improves on the Instant messenging experience.

Im tired of listening to all of you say there is no competition for fire. Adium is competing and, at least in my mind, coming out ahead.
