1897 Norinco Any Good

If you are using the Norinco replica of the Winchester 1897, or know of someone using it, how do you think it compares with the originals? Is it reliable? Is the action smooth? Etc.

The Norinco appears to be a good reproduction at a reasonable price. I prefer the sound of the Winchester 1897 - but have a Norinco as a back up. If you shoot a side by side and would like to experience the magic of shooting a 97 and do not want to make the investment of the W97 this is a great shotgun. Every CAS Shooter should have one. You can never have too many CAS guns.

I have sold a number of them and they are great for the money. They slick up easy and shoot straight, what else could you ask for. I have a few in stock, contact me direct to buy one

They are crap. Step up a hundred and buy a real gun like the new EMF coachgun or something that will not fall apart on you. There are also several Italian guns in the higher price range that are worth the investment.

I have been told that the stock may split on this piece. If this is true (I don't have one yet) then a simple job of reinletting the stock would be in order. As it is easy to do, a dremel moto tool with a sanding drum will work nicely.

I personally dont own a Norinco Model 1897 but have looked at several and shot one. If one prefers a repeater they seem to be fine. As far as the smoothness of action, I had a friend a few years ago that found a vintage Winchester 97 packed in cosmoline. It worked ruffer than a corn cob and had never been fired. I think roughness is the nature of the beast. Get yourself a mule-eared double if you want smoothness

RE: 1897 Norinco Any Good

I have one of the first of the Norinco 97's. And there are several shooters in our area that have them. There is only one problem that I am aware of at this time. That is the screws shake loose, and they will fall out. If you keep them tight that is not a problem. The factory tells you to put locktite on the screws.

The finish on the wood is a plastic or lacquer that easily chips. At our last match a shooter showed me one that he had stripped and refinished. It looked like oak or somthing, and it looked ok. The factory told me that they are now shipping American wood for future stocks.

All in all I like my Norinco 97, I have two originals, they both are from the turn of the century and are tipical of quite old shotguns. One is badly worn, and does not feed shells reliably. The other is mechanacly better but it rattles a lot when you shake it. The Norinco is new. There is a limited supply of original 97's that are seeing a lot of use, and I jumped on the opertunity to get the first new 97 I saw.

I have one of the ones with the mystery wood. Anyone know of someone making replacement stocks for these? Thanks.

I have never owned one myself but some of my posse has and everyone of us say, "Skip the Norinco and find yourself an old Stevens 311. You will spend about the same amount of money, maybe $200 to $250, saw the barrels of to 20 inches and you have a good starter's coach gun.

FOR THA MONEY I DONT THINK THA NORINCO IS BAD. MAKE SURE YOU TIGHTEN UP ALL THA SCREWS B4 YA TAKE IT OUT FER THA 1ST TIME. SHOOTS, EJECTS, AN RELOADZ REAL WELL.YAH ITZ TIGHT AN STIFF,BUT WHAT NEW ONE AINT? SHOOT IT ALOT AN BREAK IT IN OR DO AN ACTION JOB ON IT. IF YER AMBITIOUS,YOU CAN STRIP AND DANISH OIL THA STOCK TO LOOK PRETTY GOOD.JUST USE A WOOD CONDITIONER ON ALL THA END GRAINS B4 THA DANISH OIL,LIKE THA PISTOL GRIP AND GOOSE NECK AREA. MY ONLY COMPLAINT IS I'VE E-MAILED A NORINCO SERVICE CENTER(COYOTE CAP'S)SEVERAL TIMEZ FER A SCREW, ALMOST A MONTH AGO AND HAVENT GOT ANY ACTION!
