most preferred ammo

it seems to me that most people shooting cas all use reloads and it seems that most are ok but there is a few out there that are downloading the powder till a 45 shoots like a 22 i reckon that there should be a minimum load and a ro can check the ammo if he thinks that the loads are too light and it could build up too much back preasure

RE: most preferred ammo

Downloading is a very dangerous practise and can result into a gun blowing to pieces. Maybe not injure the shooter but look out for the shooters standing near by. The .45 and .44 calibres were originally designed to be filled with black powder not to have a very small amount of modern day power in them.I believe in the Spirit of the Game and I don't believe that shooting .22 like ammo is nothing but Gameing. I shoot .44 specials with 220 grain projectiles doing 900 fps.

Holy Maggie's drawers...! Tinstar is right. You download, (under power if you will) and you run the risk of ripping the topstrap off your pistola at the worst, and/or getting shrapnell plucked out of your shooting hand by the doc.

Talk about doing a dumb thing. Only the VERY professional and competent shooter/reloader should ever try that one, and it would still be a dumb thing.

You down power a round and most likely you WILL get one that's knecked a tad tight, or a hair too light on the powder and the bullet stops half way up the barrel.

And I mean that bullet STOPS INSIDE the barrel. If your lucky, the next round won't blow up the receiver and you will have noticed there was no dust/ping/clang of lead hitting the target and STOP shooting to examine the gun under safe conditions.

Unlucky..? Well, I have seen more than my share of firearms related 'accidents', and it is my humble opinion that every danged one of them was preventable, provided the owner exercised an ounce of common sense.

And that is the most words I ever spouted out on one of these here UBBs...

RE: most preferred ammo

I use 357 Vaquaro's but shoot the 38 specials. The 45 is traditional but the cost of cases, powder and bullets are high and the very low cost of the 38s allow me and my wife to shoot these for less than the cost of just me shooting the 45s. If cost is no issue then I would definitly use the 45. For instance, 38 specials are using 4.0 grains of 231 and 45 colt 8.3. Cast bullets per 1000 are $20 for 158 grain 38s or $40 for 230 grain 45s. Cases are free in 38 special and 45 colt from Starline are $114 plus shipping. These last a long time if you don't lose them!
