Mother

I beleive people dont thing the song MOTHER has any meaning. He is spilling his thoughts into this song. Crying out that his mother didn't want him, so who does. Hearing the song even puts a tear to my eye. I have been lucky enough to have a loving mother.

RE: Mother

You are so true. Not anyone really shows as much affection towards their mother as they should. The song has so many emotional sayins like, "Mother, you had me but I never had you."
A loving mother can be one of the greatest gifts you can recieve in the world, don't ever take advantage of it.

RE: Mother

You guys need to know something about John's early life: His mom was killed (in front of his own house by a motorist) before he was old enough to remember her very well. That's why he "never had her." His dad left him and his mother when he was a child, hence "but you didn't need me." This song is somewhat of a eulogy to his mother ("I... just want to tell you... good-bye"). But I don't want to over philosophize: you can enjoy this song immensely on any level.

RE: Mother

Johns mother died when he was old enough to remember her.
She got him into music, against his aunt Mimi's wanting she got him a old jazz guitar.
She was hit by a police car afterjumping a wall after walkin through allies as a short cut.
And his father was forced from his life by his mother.
He asked to have him but his mother said no and ended giving him away to his auntie.
His family always made him feel as if his father didn't want him.
Only after his father death did he ever find out that he tried to but he wasnt allowed to.
He even planned to take him on vacation and never bring him back.
His mother loved him enough to reconize that she couldn't raise him with the life style she lived and so she did the "wise" thing to do.
He was always mad at her when he was young for their seperation, but only later did he seem to realize how much his mother loved him.

RE: Mother

John had a sad childlife in that his mother left him when he was a very young boy and he was raised by his Auntie. Then when he was older, he reunited with his mother, only to be taken away from her due to a drunked policeman who ran her over. This song MOTHER was during his primal scream days, hence all the gut wrenching noises.Eventually,, Yoko was sorta his mother....does anyone remember the Rolling Stone cover a few months before his death where John was naked and in a fetal position next to Yoko?...just wondering....

RE: Mother

i beleive you are thinkin of Two virgins:unfinished music #2. if i am thinkin right he did two of them, one in like 69 and the other much later in life, but not just before he died, remember, he had lost feelings for yoko the last few years of his life. they were in a middle of a divorce when he died, that is why "they" did that double fantasy album, it was part of their divorce settlement.
