scared to talk about surgery with friends

I need durgery and I don't have a choice. i'm thirteen years old and my friedns, try as they might don't seem to understand what I'm going through. I want to explain the surgery to them but I'm scared they'll laugh at me because at my school you don't want to be different. Any suggestion?

RE: scared to talk about surgery with friends

I'm fourteen years old and tomorrow I'm going to Manchester Childrens Hospital to be told whether or not I'm going to have to have surgery. To put it lightly, I'm ****ing myself. I hate the idea of being operated on. I just want to be normal, as normal as I want to be anyway...if that makes sense...! My best friend hasn't got any idea what I'm going through really. I talk to her about it, but she doesn't really understand what it feels like inside. I can't really put it into words, I sort of want to scream until I can't anymore. When I talk about it I have to try my absolute hardest not to cry. This probably souns really wimpish, but I can't help it. I don't think that you should feel scared to talk about your operation or anything to do with scoliosis. If you think that they'll laugh at you, tell them that. They have no right to do this, but if they're real friends they won't do that. I have recently started talking about my condition with some of my teachers (the ones I really like!) and with other people in my tutor (class) and that really helps me. I only talk about it to people I feel comfortable with, this is very unusual. I would really appreciate it if you would e-mail me, I would like to know how you feel about living with scoliosis.

RE: scared to talk about surgery with friends

Hi Guys! I had surgery when I was 13 and now I am 33!! It was a scary time, especially since I was told that I had a 50% chance of being paralyzed. I had to wear a Milwaukee Brace afterwards for 9 months and start high school. It was hard to face, scary. But I found that I met true friends that way. Friends who care about you as a person, not what you look like. Then when I got out of the brace the people who didn't talk to me as much started to come around, but the huge brace, I mean huge brace, was my friend detector. Hope that your surgeries went well. You have much to be thankful for that technology has come a long way over the years. Keep strong, keep active and you will be so blessed for years to come.

RE: scared to talk about surgery with friends

Hey, folks, I've been where you are. I had spinal fusion surgery when I was 12 years old (I'm 34 now; the surgery was in 1981), and before I had the surgery I felt like a total freak. Seventh grade was the first year I had to change clothes for Phys. Ed. class, and the kids in my class made fun of me because I looked "deformed," as they so politely put it, because of my severe scoliosis. I was scared before I had surgery, but I was lucky that I had a really good doctor, who explained the whole procedure to me and told me what the risks were and basically treated me like an adult (which is what I wanted). My mother was also very supportive, which helped me a lot. Anyway, if you folks ever want to talk, please feel free to e-mail me and I'll be glad to listen and help out however I can. :-)

Hey
I just recently had the surgery on August 9 of 2002.
There is nothing to be embarrassed about. I know exactly what you are going through but you just have to take it in stride. Dont worry about the surgery there are alot of risks but you will make it through. You will also feel a whole lot better.

RE: scared to talk about surgery with friends

I dont know if this is a help.. I am 24 years old, I attend a major University, I will be having the surgery soon and I too am afraid to talk about this with anyone... Even at my age, it can feel isolating. I dont want attention for my scoliosis, but yet, its frusturating how the people I do share this with, cannot understand just how much it affects my life. I am a strong, educated woman.. and yet, I feel ashamed and embarrassed of what people will think. It doesnt make any sense. So I know what you are going though. It sucks.

RE: RE: RE: scared to talk about surgery with friends

Hi - I'm the Fiona from further up the page, I did a search of my name on google and found this page! I'm 17 now!

Last year in July I had major spinal surgery for my scoliosis, and I'm glad I went ahead with it. I was terrified, and unfortunately I only met people with scoliosis after I'd had the surgery - I could have done with talking to some people beforehand!

Anyway, if anybody reading this is facing surgery - I know it can be terrifying at times, but things will come and things will go - its only one chapter of your life. That probably sounds really daft, but thats how I got through it - one day at a time, 'cause its **** at the time but I'm back on my motorbike again already!

So yea, good luck to everybody! =o)
