Well - I know of course that Salinger does NOT have part II in one of his drawers. However, somehow I wish he had - especially if Holden was to meet Jane Gallagher again...

RE: This Poll

Hi Bernie, if CITR part II is like the Glass stories, I don't wish he wrote it, but mostly, I think it'd be neat to visit with Holden again, so I think it'd be great to have another Catcher book to read. I wonder what sort of theme it would have: more catching in the rye would be just fine.

There sure are a lot of annoying flashing banners in this polling thing. Makes me want to turn off image animations..

RE: This Poll

The thing is, I seem to remember that Mark Twain wrote a sequel to HUCK FINN (Huck Finn Among the Indians I believe it was) which was apparently disastrous, so I am at least ambivalent about a sequel to the Catcher...

RE: RE: This Poll

i'd luv 2 read or hear more 'bout Holden horsin' around and all, but... Catcher is perfect as it is--a sequel could ruin its sacredness. tis not worth the risk (risktaker as i may be). anyways, i could always read CITR again and again and again... :)

re jane, i'd like to think they *did* still meet up after his time in there.

RE: RE: This Poll

Who the hell wants another sequel? This is not Aliens III or The Terminator II or Jurassic Park III or Halloween part 17. This is a real literary masterpiece and as such does not require part two. It is like asking Leonardo to paint part two of the Monalisa. Anybody out there who thinks everything needs a follow up is screwed up. They should live the present and enjoy what's out there instead of being phonies pretending The Catcher in the Rye did not reflect their own inner trouble. As if reading part two is going to solve any of their internal conflicts. Enjoy it by what it is. Down with all sequels and demand new and original stuff from producers, writers and Hollywood. Bastards.

RE: This Poll

but i hate the united states, like salinger do. he has done well by coming living in my country.. even if we are also being invaded by this poor culture of pleasure and inegalities :-( im sorry for the american who are there, but it is very annoying this omnipresence of this american music, food, way of thinking life.. you can't imagine.. i understand that some guys like ben laden could do something like what we have seen 6 months ago.. you must fight your own country desire of hegemony.. Look at Bush, he is just giving some more dollars to the army, is it a way to get in peace???

RE: RE: This Poll

I believe that it would be great if Salinger pulled a sequel out of his safe and allowed the rest of the world to enjoy it. I strongly believe that it would not ruin the original, nor flop. Many would like to recieve a second dose of "madness" from the mind of Holden. Not only would I love to hear his continuing opinion on life and the "phonies" that inhabit this Earth, I would want to find out if he truly ever finds his love, Jane.
On a different note I would like to question the comments added by karmel. He seems like a full blooded phony himself.

RE: This Poll

Salinger wouldn't write a sequel to Catcher in the Rye. Catcher in the Rye isn't just a story about Holden; it's a story about all the youth out there who see the world and all of its hypocrisy and phonyness. Catcher in the Rye gives some hope or inspiration to those who allow the atrocities of human behavior to depress them to the extent that they can't live in the world. This is what Mr. Antolini talks about to Holden. Also, Holden looks at James Castle and admires him for what he died for. If Holden could instead search for others like himself or James Castle, they could be satisfied with their surroundings. Their utopia would come from their relationships with other people. (this is one of my key beliefs in life that utopia comes from relationships) So back to my point, Salinger didn't want a conclusion, he didn't to tell what would happen because as a reader, we finish the book in the same mental state as Holden. We as the reader decide, what will the future bring? This is the beauty of Catcher in the Rye and why I find it to be the greatest book I have ever read. This may not have much bearing because I just recently gained a passion for books, but then again I can only hope I find another book that is just as much, or in fact more meaningful to me than Catcher in the Rye.

RE: this poll

a sequel to CR would somehow detract from the original. i dont think that salinger would have wanted a sequel, i liked the way catcher concluded, with no definite ending, the way holden was like. it left you to think quietly for a while. if there had of been a sequel, it would have meant that holden would have to have been portrayed different, and he wouldnt have been the holden we have in our minds. much as i love catcher, a sequel would basically, really suck.

RE: This Poll

As much as i would luurvve 2 read about Holden again, i'm kinda glad there wasnt a sequel, catcher in the rye is brilliant as it is. I love it coz it doesnt have a definite beginning, middle + end, it goes against all the rules of story-writing, it is about youth, + taking the story any further-following his life would just ruin it (even tho i'd love 2 know how holden ended up)

RE: This Poll

Although I don't think good (very good) books (or films for that matter) should have a sequel, God knows I would enjoy to read some more about Holden...

Karen

PS Good site, keep on the good work!

RE: This Poll

CITR provided ample closure. Furthermore a sequel would never be able to capture the true essence of Holden.

Everything you neede to know was in the first book. A second would be not worth it.

RE: This Poll

Too right, if he'd written a sequel it would be too much like those goddam movies that Holden hates ... 'The Catcher Returns [This Time It's Personal]'. You can't write a sequel to this book. That's the beauty of it. :-) xx
