(Lots of words about why) I don't want to vote

This is the first poll of Wayne for a long time that I'm thinking I'm going to abstain of participating in. It's simply impossible for me to rate anything listed (except of "Disco 2", of course) less than 5 stars.

Don't call me a blind fanatic. I'm not.

Honestly, I've tried to think of reasons to rate various albums as 4 and less stars, but couldn't come up with anything reasonal. Alright, I'd rate albums I like the most ("Behaviour", "Introspective", "Bilingual", "Nightlife", "Release", "Fundamental" & "Elysium") as 5 stars, that's obvious beginning here, but then again my less favourite albums (including "Very" and "Actually") simply the best ones in PSB career and even if they aren't my favourites, I couldn't call them anything but sheer brilliance of Neil's songcraft and Chris' tune wizardry, not mentioning outstanding work of producers, engineers and designers. Even when I'm looking to recent albums, which I'd place at end of my favourites list (that doesn't mean I don't like and enjoy them!), I can't agree with some harsh commentators who saying that their "recent stuff" is weaker than "early stuff". That's not true for me.

Pet Shop Boys are startlingly consistent in their quality, and that's why I'm quit here. To rate everything as 5 stars (except of one poor thing) is virtually to non-participate in this poll.

Just noticed that poll's rules is against overusing of 5 stars rating. Well, that's just fine with me.

Agreed, this poll is actually quite hard.

Whereas I expect next week's poll to be easy, because PSB at their (IMO) weakest (Bilingual, Nightlife, Release) is still ahead of at least 98.5% of whatever happens to be on the charts at any given time. ;]

The newer the albums the less stars I have given.

I couldn't wait to use the 'bomb' on the last two albums.

Drem,

I can certainly understand rating most PSB albums with 5 stars if you're comparing them to other artists. (Actually, I wouldn't do so myself -- many more would get 4s from me than 5s -- but still I can understand it.

But when you're comparing them just to other PSB albums, I think one would have to list many at less than 5. Do you love all of their albums equally? Do you listen to them all the same amount? Do none of them have songs that you sometimes skip? Do some of them not "hold up together" better than others? Have they never grown, matured, evolved, improved -- or, for that matter, decreased in quality? That's why I don't understand not being able to assign different ratings to PSB albums when you're just considering them and no other artist.

But to each his own. Although I may disagree, I respect your decision. Thanks!

Wayne

I agree with you to an extent, Wayne. But we need to think of songs not only as equal units but as wholes, no? "God Willing," "Psychological" and "Numb" are fairly low, so "Fundamental" would fall, numerically. Some albums have 8 songs, other 19. (Not in the case of PSB, but albums more generally.)

I suppose I am just resisting here because I think "Fundamental" is so great, despite the fact that I skip "God Willing," "Numb," the first half of "I Made My Excuses"...

Perhaps a poll regarding the worst song/bit of song on each album?

RE: (Lots of words about why) I don't want to vote

To clarify about the last sentence of my previous post: I'm referring to an actual "section" or "piece" of song that sort of weighs it down. Probably impossible to do a poll, but it would be an interesting discussion.

The first minute and a half "I Made My Excuses and Left" kills me. I also skip the long-ish drum intro to the album version of "Red Letter Day." This isn't to say that I want lyrics and excitement, necessarily... I really love the extended intro of the album version of "Being Boring," and I also tend to prefer the "Introspective" cuts. (Though I could do without the interminable "In My House" section.
