Compilations

I don't think a compilation could cause something like 'cognitive dissonance' because a compilation is an 'essential' of the artist. I wonder about someone that bought a PSB compilation saying, e.g.: its style is so much unlike anything that artist has done before, or: its singles (b-sides for Alternative) are very much unlike the rest of the albums. I recognize that many of us were disagree with the tracks selections (or its edits, could be for purposes of space in the case of Discography), but I think that's another topic. Generally, we (as fans) already knew the songs selected (except for the new songs). I bought PopArt in the early 2004 and it was my first PSB album. I feel lucky to have known them exactly with that compilation because I first heard their most famous singles without having to judge their studio albums.

RE: Compilations

I guess that for some, the division of PopArt to Pop and Art (in the first place, even!), and whether certain tracks truly belonged in the disc they were included in might be a reason for cognitive dissonance.

RE: RE: Compilations

Yes it could be. I think remember once Wayne asked about Pet Shop Boys letting fans decide what would be the songs for a PSB compilation, don't remember the final results, but seeing opinions I've read at different times, it's likely that if this happens someday, we would not probably see songs like 'Home and Dry' or 'Before'.
