Just goes to show...

This just goes to show that teens ages 13-15 start cutting and yet society can't to didley squat crap about it...god society sucks when it comes to s.i.....they don't even pay attention to it. Here there are like hundreds maybe probably even thousands of people out there who cut/burn ect. on purpose and yet they know and they chose not to do anything about it? I don't know about everyone else but that just ****es me off!

RE: Just goes to show...

erm...i really don't want to sound patronising or insulting or anything. I'm just making an observeration. The most common age for first self harming was 13-15 (i was 11). Now going all biology-like here, but thats the main age where women hit puberty. Like i say i don't want any1 to take this the wrong was, and i would like to know this myself, but does anyone esle think there could be alot of teenage hormones in that? most of us know how stressfull being a teenager is with all these new feelings are, and with some of that being negative it just makes me think hormones might act as some kind of magnifying effect on the emotions already there.
does anyone know if theres been any link between puberty and depression/SI? if anyone knows anything i would appreciate it if they could let me know...it's really been bugging me for a while now

that MIGHT explain about the women (it may be, good observation) but how does that explain the men?? I seriously dont think there is anything wrong with cutting. (i started in 6th grade) Its just the stupid ALWAYS happy perky people that dont understand it.

RE: Just goes to show...

Sorry to sound patronising or anything, but I believe that there *is* something wrong with cutting. No, I'm not one of those happy people, I've been cutting for over 6 years. But the problem with it is that it is a twisted way of coping with things. It's not normal - as much as we might like it to be. Okay - it's not *wrong* as such, but it isn't safe. It isn't healthy. It generally means that you have grown up, and not been taught proper coping mechanisms for extremes of emotion. For example, I cut when I'm depressed, angry, scared, and sometimes, even when I'm really happy. Simply because I don't know of any other way to express my emotions. Because we don't do that in my family. We don't express our emotions - particularly the negative ones. And those ALWAYS happy people - generally aren't always happy, they just know how to deal with and healthily express their negative emotions. Or they can hide them really really well.

RE: Just goes to show...

uuuummmmm.....excuse me, but i just wanted to say that i disagree on your explanation on why people cut. im not being mean or anything i just thought that you should kno that not all people cut because they dont kno how to express themselves. they just might not want too. maybe they're afraid that if they express what they're feeling, it might hurt someone else, or they might be shunned for it. thats why i do "it".i kno how to express myself, im just alwayz afraid that i might hurt someone else or that someone might get mad at me for it. so whatever im upset about i just stay upset about and pray that it works out on its own. most of the time it doesnt and with all the stress piling up, i break down and do "it". its like doing "it" makes room for more stress untill its too much again and i have to make more room. well thats just why i do "it" and maybe no one else is like that and they all just dont kno how to express themselves, but, one person does it and knos. im sorry if this sounded mean, it wasnt meant to.

well i think everyones right, and everyones wrong. Every single person who cuts have their own reasons whether it be hormones, or fear, or whatever else. these reasons are personal to the individual person, so everyones valid.

RE: Just goes to show...

whatever the reason you cant jsut say that its hormones while ignoring the socialisation of girls. if you look at who it predominatly effects (and i know that wont cover every one but from a psychological stand point it ends up beign percentages) then its caucasian females from about 11 to 17 who are beign bombarded with imagry about how they should look and what they should do while being socialised into a position that is relativly submisive to males with a perception of little control over their options. self harm can be a way of exercisign control over something (that is what it tend to be for me, though as a male i should have plenty to control) that is theirs, there own body. any one have ideas over cross culture work here?? if not then anyone willing to help me look?? maybe a study could push people into actully looking up from the rose coloured world of suburbia where the problems are war and crime and actully look at things in there own families. mail me with anything (except insults) s_francis_uk@hotmail.com
