Falacies of the 'Dolphins of War' web site

I hadn't realized that there was an ethical dilemma of using dolphins in the military. Whoever wrote that paper, the original one about the dolphins of war, obviously did absolutely no research. Nor did they try to find out the facts about what is done in the U.S. Navy Marine Mammal Program. Their clames about the Navy beating the dolphins and sendng them on suicide missions is berserk. Excluding the fact that doing such things would be wrong, it would also be unbeneficial. Why would they spend the amount of money spent and the three years of training on a dolphin that all they were going to do was send it to blow itself up. Such an action would be illogical and do nothing but cost the Navy, government, and tax payers money. Nor would they 'beat' the dolphin, as the animal could no longer function until it had time to heal.
Also, the crap about the dolphins not having a choice about what they do? Thats completely incorrect. When the dolphins are on missions/training in the open ocean, they can leave if they want. There is nothing stoping them from leaving and never returning.
Oh, and twenty percent of the dolphins being lost each year? Completely untrue. Less than ten dolphins have been lost sense the program began.
And that isn't twenty percent.

RE: Falacies of the 'Dolphins of War' web site

I have just read "Dolphins of War" and find many of the things written here to be suspect.

The section on "Dolly" is full of wrong "facts". ---Dolly that escaped from the US Navy--- Dolly Phynne did not escape from the Navy, she was turned loose when the project was moved from Key West FL to Calif. She was spotted around the island of Key West for several weeks before disappearing. Several weeks later she turned up in the canals of SugarLoaf Shores were she ended up behind the Asbury's house.

----A notable trick she learned was retrieving dimes from the water and returning them to Jean. Several different coins were thrown into the water but Dolly was only to return the dimes---

Actually several coins, usually a penny, nickel, dime and quarter were thrown out into the canal while Dolly was given the "hold" (stay) command. She would turn her body in the direction of the thrown coins and using her sonar "watch" as each coin fell and landed on the bottom. Then she would be shown the coin that she was to retrieve. She would go and find that coin, then she was shown the next coin and do the same until all coins were retrieved. About one out of twenty coins would be lost in the bottom mud of the canal.

-----Never did Dolly try to hurt the Asbury family or anyone else.----

Want to bet! Dolly was very gentle most of the time, especially with kids and people who were not comfortable in the water. BUT, she could and would get rough if she thought you were doing something to "her" family that you should not. Ask my father when he and my mother (Harry and Jean)were in the water and he grabbed mother unexpectedly. She yellped and Dolly smacked him with her tail enough to lift him up out of the water. Or ask my ex-wife. When we were dating we were in the water lying across our surfboard, she and I got to splashing each other when Dolly come up between us and rolled her off the board. Dolly then chased her up onto the bank of the canal.

Yes, I'm one of the Asburys and I grew up with Dolly as a member of our family.

BTW - the last picture in the article, the one of the small boat with guy in a white baseball cap was taken in the mid '60's with one of the original trainers, Hank. The dolphin is either Dolly Phynne or Diana Phynne, I can't tell which one. I worked with Hank for several years. Also some of the original dolphins had names, besides Dolly and Diana there was Huck Phynne, Adolph Phynne and several others, some of the seals names were, Carbon, O-ring, paraffin and others of that type.

RE: Falacies of the 'Dolphins of War' web site

We are read Dolly the Dolphin by Margaret5 Gay Malone and wanted to find out more information regarding Dolly.

Where can we get more information? Is she still alive? How long ago did you take care of her? How old were you?

We like the book so far.
