I voted...

for pretty much everything. If it doesn't keep my attention, I usually stop playing, so every aspect is important to me

RE: I voted...

Yeah I know it's the multiple choice feature. But it's fun to pretend that more than half a dozen people ever vote :P

RE: I voted...

I'm a gameplay Kinda Guy, so I voted for Battle Sequences, Menu ****, and one other one I forgot. The way I see it, and RP !!!G!!! is a game, and if you can't have fun PLAYING the game, then it's not a fun game. And a good story has nothing to do with PLAYING the game.

RE: I voted...

I like storyline, but if the battle sequence is really good, then it goes on my "favorites" list. SD3 was actually the first one I tried that had such an unique battling sequence, and ToP was the second. With ToP I can train to level 90 without getting tired of battling :P

Y'see where X = green beenz is set as integer, the coefficient of Y is a variable directly related to lololololzzzz!!111111 and that the equation x = b^2/2 +- 1/2/-b^2-4ac solves X, providing that you are drunk and that green beenz!111 are available.

RE: I voted...

Well, sometimes puzzles make me shudder. I think the essence of the RPG is in the storyline and character development.

If you encountered a new game, what could it not have (in any recognizable form) and you would still consider it an RPG?

I could not see a game being an RPG without either of these.

Additionally, I've found that games which focus less on levelling via combat are generally:
a. closer to my idea of an RPG
b. a bit more fun - but that is personal preference

One of my favorite RPGs is an old PC game - Betrayal at Krondor. Out of Approximately 15 skills that improve with use, only 4 relate to and are improved by combat. Very good system IMO.

It meant you explored more, it meant that the game emphasize world and storyline, and it meant that if you spent 90 hours playing - it wasn't because 80 of them were combat sequences.

Not to say I don't enjoy the old RPGs, but I do not think that the fighting was at the heart, but rather the essence of the story is what made them RPGs. The idea of a character who goes on an adventure/quest and improves himself in his efforts to perform a great deed for humanity.
Otherwise what is heroing all about?

Arg!

People are voting for storyline and character development?! No FFV fans, then... but the thing is, why would people play games for the stories? Most of the stories aren't even that good! Read a fruckin book!

RE: RE: I voted...

Betrayal at Krondor is also one of my very favorite games. I could not really answer this poll as to me what makes it an rpg is the fact that you level in things as you fight/do them more. BAK just has a different sort of leveling and such and it is all vastly supperior to the exp leveling in most games. I don't care about story or characters all that much, although like any game that all adds to it. I just care about the battle system and the world and tweaking equipment and such. I also greatly prefer strategy RPG's.
