Seeker? There is no Ultimate Pen

I find it fascinating that anyone who writes with a fountain pen can conceive of an ultimate pen. I submit that there can not be such an animal. Every time one picks up a pen and starts writing the circumstances are different. Did you ever try to write while angry - that fine flex nib you love doesn't work. You need the manifold nib or else. Signing your name? I like a big and bold signature using a broad or stub nib not my fine flex. Editing copy- that stub or broad just will not quality - that is when I need that fine or xfine nib. Mood swings, different types of paper, different writing chores require different pens and nibs. The ultimate nib? I submit that one only exists for that time when everything comes together at that moment only. Don

Well, maybe there are many ultimate pens!
I could not agree more that different writing situations call for different nibs. But how about balance, grip, and that looks that you always wishted went into a single pen?
By all practical measures, I am a User, but isn't there a little bit of a Seeker in all of us?

RE: Seeker? There is no Ultimate Pen

When I was young my dad had a Parker 51 navy blue that I venerated.
When I went in the Air Force in 1970, I found a Parker 51 Special navy blue set. Loved it.
I bought many Sheaffers, Crosses, and a few Montblancs, which I thought were ultimate. When the resin broke at the 144's cap retaining ring, and I found out the cost of just having it looked at, I found my old 51 Special. Not wanting to lose it (the pencil got legs), I bought several on EBay. The ultimate one seems to be a 51 Mark 4 with gold filled top and medium nib. All the Parker 51s are great pens, but this is the ultimate, and it is classier looking that the Montblanc, and it doesn't get ink on my middle finger.

RE: Seeker? There is no Ultimate Pen

I always considered myself a user, till I discovered I was actually looking for the ultimate pen, so I had been in fact a seeker all the time. But now, I'm convinced that I've definitely become a simple happy user, since I finally found "that one pen", the ultimate writing experience: a near-mint Sheaffer PFM V with extra-fine nib. I've tried a lot of brands, designs, and nib widths, and no pen I know gets even close to the features of this pen. I'm even thinking to sell out my whole collection, because since I own this precious PFM I don't use my other pens anymore.

Keep on seeking!

No Ultimate Pen?
Don't make me depressed.

OF COURSE there is, out there,
somewhere, somewhen...

Have fun!
