| Posted By: Martijn Posted On: October 18th Views: 233 | Young (and old) offenders, gather here! Sooo, what have you's done? I've been guilty of illegally downloading (only rare stuff near impossible to find in shops anymore) and copying (making compilations for trying to turn friends into fans). Trivial stuff. Well, except for stealing a copy of Bilingual/Further Listening from a Paris record store. That summer (2001) I'd bought all the reissues, and I still needed two of them: Please & Bilingual. But I only had money for 1 of them so I decided now was a good time for the shop to run a "Buy 1, get 1 free" kinda deal ;) Mind you, I got punished when my girlfriend when she found out. Not for shoplifting, but hypocrisy, cos I'd got mad at her from stealing a necklace from a shop only a few weeks earlier. Mind you, we're law abiding citizens these days, the minor traffic offense excluded. |
| Posted By: josie Posted On: October 18th Views: 214 | RE: Young (and old) offenders, gather here! Martijn -I admire your being honest about past naughtyness. I do not have anything to confess on this subject but I can understand fans doing illegal downloads if they are situated in a part of the world where they really do not have access to the material. Some of us are lucky to be able to buy things easily and of course we should, otherwise they would cease to exist. |
| Posted By: Mark Posted On: October 18th Views: 205 | RE: Young (and old) offenders, gather here! I've downloaded before, but then gone on to buy the items anyway. And with services like Spotify, haven't felt the need to download anything since. |
| Posted By: Gilles Posted On: October 18th Views: 188 | RE: Young (and old) offenders, gather here! I'm the only one so far having picked "parking illegally" and here's the story : we drove all the way to London for the Trafalgar Square performance of Battleship Potemkin, the plan being to leave right after the show, catch the last car-train under the Chunnel and be home by morning (which basically meant about driving 400 kms - 260 miles -, see the show, run for autographs and a brief chat with N&C - which we obtained - and drive back the same distance; crazy, isn't it?*). But we unfortunately parked on a disabled persons' spot in the centre of London. Which we of course never do, we honestly didn't see the sign and our good faith is total. What does the London police in such cases? Clamp the car. So that's how we found it when we returned. Had to call the clamping service to get this removed, meaning an outrageous fine was added to the cost of the trip and divided between us. It took about two hours to round this up and thus, obviously, we missed our scheduled train and has to wait at the terminal between 4 and 6 AM, something like that. After another 100 kms, I had to let a friend drive, otherwise I would have fallen asleep with hallucinations... That's one of our PSB stories (besides, overspeeding or parking without paying are everyday stuff, thus not specific at all to PSB events ;o) * We of course did worse than that to see them in Bern in July 2000, after the cancellation in Roskilde : 750 kms - 460 miles maybe -, the show, Moby right after, and the same mileage back, starting at 1.30 AM, home at about 10... |
| Posted By: Betsy Posted On: October 18th Views: 187 | RE: Young (and old) offenders, gather here! I don't know if it counts (yea probably) but I ticked "illegally copied" because I used software to record some of the exclusive tracks they put up on the site. Just to listen to myself though. (Mostly I just bookmarked the links so I could find them if I wanted.) Re: illegal downloads...I'm in a strange situation where people assume since I'm such a big fan I always have and/or want to have all the leaked/pirated stuff as soon as it's out so it ends up in my Inbox without my even going to look for it. I always delete it without even listening and it's torture! |
| Posted By: Mark Nolan Posted On: October 18th Views: 178 | RE: Young (and old) offenders, gather here! Martijn, I am very proud of you. You did what you needed to do on balance and at least you bought the rest of them. Of all the re-issues, although its very good, its the least essential (No thanks to Before[sorry Chris...but realise it]and Saturday Night Forever,) which is filler) What happened to no filler. Ian Brown seems to have done it????? |
| Posted By: chris-freak Posted On: October 18th Views: 174 | RE: Young (and old) offenders, gather here! Nearly anyone could vote for downloading music illegally. Another thing was when PSB arrived in Helsinki this year, I didn't pay for the parking at the airport because we rished to greet them. I didn't get a fine, luckily. :D |
| Posted By: Martijn Posted On: October 18th Views: 169 | RE: Young (and old) offenders, gather here! Mark Nolan, you talking about "My Way"? Is it any good? Ian somehow dropped out of my sight after Be There and Golden Greats... (I loved Time Is My Everything, but for some reason I never got to listening to the whole record). I should definitely give it a shot! I may need to nick it though because I also want the 3CD-2LP-1DVD version of the Stone Roses reissue :S |
| Posted By: matt Posted On: October 18th Views: 157 | RE: Young (and old) offenders, gather here! This is quite a bizarre topic. No, PSB music has NEVER inspired me to do anything bad, but because of where I live, where they don't exist after Discography, I downloaded their songs off of a website which didn't charge. This was a few years back, and doing THAT inspired me to buy all of their material legally. While their music has never inspired the demon in me, in order to get their music, I used the website. I got all of their stuff legally because downloading is just so tacky. I like how "pretty" and "nice" everything looks now. You can't get the cases by downloading. But yeah, that was a while back, and I no longer do it. Although, I can't help but admit that it was downloading that really helped me explore their works, which probably justifies why I am a fan today. |
| Posted By: Reece Posted On: October 18th Views: 140 | RE: Young (and old) offenders, gather here! I have never stole from a shop, however, I have illegally downloaded a couple of albums that I knew I would buy in the future. But I read an article written by Matt Bellamy (lead vocalist and guitarist from MUSE) and he wrote that ISP's (internet service providers)should be more tough when it come to downloading illegal music. But I think that they shouldn't because how would we know if we like an album so much that it is worth buying? I always buy an album if I like it. So the point is that I know I will buy the albums at some point (if I like it), through the internet or in a shop. |

| Posted By: Christopher Peterson Posted On: October 19th Views: 120 | RE: Young (and old) offenders, gather here! I'll admit to a traffic misdemeanour which is slightly due to PSB. We drove up to Sydney to see the Pets in concert in 2007. Coming back the day after, I managed to get ever so slightly lost in Sydney's vile one-way roads system, and for a very brief period of time was driving up the wrong side of the road. Were it not for PSB, I would never have driven to, or in, Sydney - so they have to take some responsibility! |
| Posted By: anonymous Posted On: October 19th Views: 116 | RE: Young (and old) offenders, gather here! I had the luck to join the after-show party after their final concert of the Nightlife tour. It took place in a separated area in a disco. I had to tell the doorkeeper lies to enter the PSB party-zone. Many people (including the boys) have been there. All drinks and snacks were for free, so I have drunken too much alcohol. The forbidden thing was that I have left the place totally drunken and drove home with my car....Oh, this is neraly exactly 10 years ago...I never drove drunken again. This is the place where they have celebrated: http://www.msconnexion.com/v3/cafe.rad |
| Posted By: Holly Posted On: October 19th Views: 86 | RE: Young (and old) offenders, gather here! Ah, people and their cars. I personally can't begin to count the number of times I have broken the speed limit while under the influence of PSB. And as if that weren't enough, while I was driving through Vancouver, BC to the Pet Shop Boys' recent concert (exactly one month ago tonight), I was in a car accident where I hit the back end of another vehicule - an impact which totaled my car. So now I am without a car, and on my copy of Yes during "Beautiful People" (the song playing during the accident) it skips horribly at exactly the point where our cars hit and the air bags exploded. I guess that's a fair punishment for me. I also let a friend copy one of my PSB CDs about three years ago - and I still feel bad about it. -Holly |

| Posted By: Mark Nolan Posted On: October 20th Views: 75 | RE: Young (and old) offenders, gather here! Martijn Its good. i ahve only playyed it twice but I love his use of orchestra. His lyrics can be a bit samey but he has said that he had the intetnion of recording this album with "no filler" in a simialr way neil has referred to "Yes" i.e. a greatest hits like set. Not so sure that its not just good marketing but I bought it and I like it. The sweeping strings and orchestra on "My Way" is in my view more effective than it is on "Legacy" but then I wanted "legacy" to be another "It couldn;t happen here!" |
