A man could get arrested

PSB music has never inspired me to break the law. I think it is worth noting though that there are many references to arrests and breaking the law and the legal process in Neil's lyrics. A man could get arrested, 'Police expect an arrest' (lyrical suggestion from Chris) and 'if they speak they break the law'from West End Girls and I my lord, may I say nothing' (Oscar Wilde trial and lyrics from DJCulture.)

I wonder of part of this comes from the criminalisation of gay men and some gay acts in the UK for many years and attendant fears of arrest?

RE: A man could get arrested

Hmmm.... good thinking!

Definitely there are a lot of reference to "breaking the law" most of which are oppressive laws within PSB lyrics, from A Man Could Get Arrested to Legacy.

I am pretty sure the criminalization of homosexual activities during the 1970s and 80s has a lot to do with that outlook!

Nice food for thought!

RE: A man could get arrested

Hi Alfina,

In the UK, acts of genital naughtiness between like-minded consenting gentlemen in private were decriminalised in 1967; so I don't think that particular aspect of the law would have caused the future-Pets any concern per se. Of course it took a lot longer for societial attitudes to catch up with the law - some might suggest they still haven't quite done so even now.

RE: A man could get arrested

Thanks, Christopher - for the info on decriminalsation of "genital naughtiness between gentlemen"!

Then, officially it is legal, but the society takes another 30 years to catch up.

Sounds like the U.S.! And following decriminalisation, there is always period of societal reaction to turn the clock back, that would normally result in violence and things like that.

I am sure this situation did affected the outlook of Our Resident Lyricist on the Law and it's enforceability.

Thanks again, Chris!

Help I never thought I would be discussing 'genital naughtiness' on Wayne's site!

Thanks for the debate Alfina and Chris,
