It's been an absolutely critical factor.

They are the Gilbert and George of rock.

RE: It's been an absolutely critical factor.

I was going to go for this but changed it to "It's been a significant defining characteristic for them, but I wouldn't say it's been a critical factor in their success"

The reason is the term "throughout their career". That simply isn't true now as it was back in the 80's or 90's.

Now I also realise there is the "It was very important at the start of their career, helping to set them apart and gain attention, but hasn't been very important ever since" option, but I don't strictly agree with that either.

I think their visual style was and, more importantly, still is incredibly important, I just don't think it's as important to OTHER people as it is to someone like me, who really enjoys their artistry beyond the songs.

I'm sure there are people out there who don't give a hoot about the photography, the videos, the double 12" sleeve designs (and how some are different from others), the Very LEGO jewel case, etc., but if the Boys didn't give any attention to those details, it'd take away from the overall PSB experience for me.

It's a thornier question than it looks.

I agree with you, Toaster in the Bath (and so does Neil, when making references in pop to buying in to "the whole package."

RE: It's been an absolutely critical factor.

Thanks, Axis 3:56! (Although I thought that Gabby's response was much more eloquent)

I'd forgotten about Neil making references in pop to buying in to (ahem!) "the whole package." Reading that Classic Pop magazine yesterday I came across a quote from him, "I quite often look through our records and think how fantastic they look. You want to make the record something special. It's not just nothing, the sleeve. I personally think it's as important as the music. You're buying an object, so you want it to be a beautiful object."

I think we can speculate from this the way Neil would have voted in the poll this week (and who knows if he does or doesn't vote in them!)

Personally, I definitely buy into the whole package. It's why I don't listen to Gary Numan records because of his politics. Or records by the band James because of their clothes. And their music.
