The magic system is what got me. It's an action RPG, so I want action, not having that damn dog sniff around for ingredients half the time. Only to find more Water for the 100th time, big whoop. And that was even before the first boss. Blegh. |

It's in a bar in your menu. You can toggle whether he likes to sniff a lot or fight every chance he gets. Same with the human if you're the dog. |

The dog was so cool, and the leveling of weapons gave an actual concrete (and fun!) reason to spend time leveling, and I LOVED the alchemy ingredients... I dunno, I think it was probably the most FUN Squaresoft game I've played, though FF8 is very close...I mean, sure the other games were great, but they weren't as fun, if you get my meaning. Their protagonists didn't like watching B movies :P. |

I found the magic to be completely useless, basically it takes a helluva lot of money just to get one spell to a respectable level, and then you get a new spel hat would make that one obsolete, except you don't have any more money. |

The whole alchemy ingredients thing, you have to admit, was pretty innovative and cool, even if you spent time taking the dog around sniffing for things (which is FUN! :P). SoE was one of those games that I actually didn't mind leveling in, since there were so many things to level - you didn't have to say, "I'll get to such and such level," which is a boring reason to fight over and over again, but if you say, "I'll get my bone club here to level 3," then you can actually see results, which is cool. A fun game, very fun. :P |

So you're saying you can let Wonder Boy sniff? :) Seriously though, to get enough alchemy ingredients to really be able to effectively use your spells takes forever. In order to get enough, you can't just keep fighting, you have to stop every two seconds for sniffing. It keeps interrupting the action, making it all damn tedious. As for Mazrim, I'll admit the alchemy system was innovative. But the sniffing just kills it. Sure, it's fun, for a little while. But as I said, I already couldn't stand it anymore by the time I got to the first boss. After which I had hardly ingredients left, so I would have to start all that sniffing over again! Argh! Nope, I've yet to see something that'll change my convictions. Changing my mind about this is unlikely anyway, so you might as well drop it, like Square seriously dropped the ball on this game. |

Seriously, I don't know how someone could like SoM and not SoE (Maybe you people don't like SoM, in that case I stand corrected); SoE is Harder and Funnier the SoM, and the fighting is just the same. SoE ain't whaty I voted for, but it's in the Top 10, I think. I voted for SaGa Frontier, but anyone who knows me could have guessed that. |
