| Posted By: George Handley Posted On: Jul 2, 2005 Views: 4028 | Terminal Station For one who has visited Montevideo for the last 50 years, I sincerely trust that the authorities currently in charge will not only keep the old Artigas station in place but also invest heavily in order to bring back what it once stood for. I may be labeled as a traditional romantic fool but let us not forget the history that all of this covers. In South America - in general - we are prone to get rid of old structures, being promised that progress will up-date them. This type of progress is rarely kept. |
| Posted By: Ralph Frost Posted On: Mar 13, 2005 Views: 4049 | It must be reinstated for its original purpose! It is absolutely ridiculous to site rail termini further away from the town/city centre they serve. Here in the UK this has happened on many rural branch lines, with many attractive buildings swept away for car parks, retail development, etc and being replaced with spartan facilities further up the line, involving a longer, less covenient walk to access the station. It would be an act of corporate vandalism for Estacion Central to be demolished as it is a magnificent edifice. Instead, I urge everyone to lobby the appropriate authorities and demand that this station be fully restored and returned to use for the purpose it was originally built - TRAINS! |

| Posted By: D.L. Milke Posted On: Apr 27, 2003 Views: 3861 | Montevideo Estacion Central As a visitor to your city, it was important for me to have the station close to the downtown (and to the port because I came via ship). |
| Posted By: DAMMTOR RAILBORG Posted On: Apr 23, 2003 Views: 3846 | NO TOQUE LA ESTACION CENTRAL I THINK THAT HISTORICAL STATIONS MUST NOT BE ERASED.IT'S A VIVID PART OF A CITY'S D.N.A. SO WE HAVE (IN ITALY) THE SAME PROBLEM... SOMEBODY INTERESTED BY ERASING TURIN (TORINO porta nuova),NAPLES (NAPOLI centrale),AND FLORENCE (FIRENZE s.maria novella) CENTRAL STATIONS. BUENA SUERTE,Y QUE MUERAS CIMOLI CON SU TRENOS DE MUERTE (TRAINSTOPPING,ITALY 2003) |
| Posted By: Thomas Hill Posted On: Dec 27, 2002 Views: 3851 | station Why must the station be removed? Why, because people are greedy, They don't care if it is a historical building or not all they look at is the bottom line. Here in the U.S. we have lost many, many historic and beautiful places to GREED. It is about time people in this world stop destroying it for MONEY. |

| Posted By: Kenneth Harrison Posted On: Mar 17, 2002 Views: 3824 | Montevideo Central Station I have been to Motevideo. I have ridden trains to and from Central Station. In a city the size of Montevideo, it is unthinkable not to have rail service for the people who come daily to the city. History teaches us that once lost, these facilities are either never recreated, or are recreated at enormous cost. With the world's population growing beyond all reasonable measure, we must ensure the mobility of the masses, or we will all suffer from their stagnation. Governments have the responsibility to serve their constituencies. Removing viable rail options is not service, but an enormous disservice, not only to the riders, but to the entire community. |
| Posted By: Garl Boyd Latham Posted On: Dec 27, 2001 Views: 3775 | Trains Stations Need Trains! In almost every instance I can personally recall, the "adaptive reuse" of an existing railway terminal has been doomed to failure - both for the structure itself and for the remaining passengers. In the United States, all one needs to do is review the history of such projects: Cincinnati, Saint Louis, Kansas City and Dallas to name but a few. It is my sincere hope that, eventually, our societies will be able to justify investing capital into the restoration and maintenance of passenger train terminals without removing the trains first! If nothing else, a properly executed station reconstruction programme - which includes railway services of all types - can benefit from the synergy which is naturally derived through the very presence of passenger trains and the people who ride them. My thoughts and prayers are with you all. |

| Posted By: Posted On: Sep 9, 2001 Views: 3635 | Ten roundtrips a day between Montevideo and 25 de Agosto (63 km). Tacuarembó-Rivera run (118 km) suspended since Dec. 7, 2000. |
| Posted By: Posted On: Aug 28, 2001 Views: 3541 | I hope that the Montevideo terminal remains intact as a RAIL terminal. So much has been lost over the years. By the way, what is the status of the commuter and rail operations in Uruguay? |
