homework is uneffective!

I am an 8th grade student and in my opinion homework isn't helping me learn anything. When I get home from school I'm so exhausted I feel my brain doesn't have the strength to think. I understand homework helps us to review what we learned in school... but is it really necessary? If the teachers were smart they would make the lessons efficient enough for the students to remember what they learned!

RE: homework is uneffective!

I am a parent of two girls. (10 and 13) My daughters do well in school, and recieve good grades. They are awesome students because they complete their homework and classwork. I also dissagree with the excessive amount of homework, but homework is a good thing!

RE: homework is uneffective!

I'm in 7th grade and the teachers at my school are always nagging us about homework!!! They don't seem to care about our lives outside school. All our teachers give us an hour of homework, and we have to get it done by the next day. They don't even let us have extensions if we miss a day! (We just get detentions for not having the work we missed done.)

RE: homework is uneffective!

Dear Amanda and others,

First off, you believe homework is INeffective, not uneffective, which is not a correct word. Maybe some additional practice in word prefixes would help you gain the practice needed to remember the correct usage.

Second, before you start complaining, learn the facts. Brain research states children need meaningful practice of concepts learned in school. Your brain is like a file cabinet. It keeps the information it believes it needs.

You "learn" many things each day. You learn that Suzi spilled milk at lunch and Timmy sneezed during Science. These are unnecessary. The "file" in your brain this information is put into is like a temporary file on your computer. It is emptied within a few hours if it is not used again.

If you would like to remember your math concept rather than having to relearn it, do your homework and your brain will refile how to do that concept in the "will use again" file.

Look up brain research for more information. It's fascinating and informative. :)

RE: homework is uneffective!

I am a grade 11 honours student who excels in every one of my classes. I complete all of my homework on time, even if it means being up late, because homework adds to your learning experience. It allows you to test your own intellectual limits and expand your knowledge. Homework also teaches you very important life skills, such as time management, initiative, organization, and prioritizing. If you are criticizing homework now, wait until you get to high school and you have even more of it and it is more difficult. As long as you can motivate yourself to do your homework, at least for your own sake, you will eventually be able to realize how valuable it really is, and maybe even eventually appreciate it.

RE: RE: homework is uneffective!

I am a 8th grade studen't who has been studying homework for years. I hate home work! (though i do it anyways and am a A studnt) it takes too much time, but since they way they teach us at my school makes it so we have to do our homework to stay up to topic in some classes, since there is not enough class time. but what if they system was changed, and students had more class time, (like an hour) so the lessons could be compleatd, and thus would avoid excessive HW. i also have teachers in my family, and they r against excessive hw

RE: homework is uneffective!

The question is when does hw go too far. i have noticed that the kindergarden days have been getting longet, and now they r getting hw! they r 5 years old for gods sake. homework goes to far when it inturpts the studnt's lives, controling them. Teachers must remember we r Kid/Teens, let us enjoy our child/teenager hood. the only real off time i have is the weakends (once in a while)school just exausts me, and when that happens i am not able to focus in shcool, and that interfears with my learning, in stead of helping it!

RE: homework is uneffective!

I have good news and bad news for you about homework.

First, Ms. Falco is correct. Brain research does show people of all ages need meaningful practice of concepts learned. Teachers provide practice time in class. Homework helps to give you the important follow up practice that your brain needs to help move the information from the short-term memory to the long-term memory.

Second, and I found this truly interesting in my brain research course, when you loose as little as even one-half hour of sleep in a night, that day’s learning can be lost. It is not cemented in long-term memory.

So, the bad news is, no matter how grand the presentation, how many wonderful hands on opportunities you have to learn, no matter how great your teacher is at reaching you, YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR LEARNING.

It’s probably time to do your homework and go to bed. Not enough time to do your homework? How much time did you spend on TV, text-messaging, email, the Internet, computer games, talking on the phone, etc?

There you go. Franklin had it right. First you work, and then you play.

RE: homework is uneffective!

I'm a sophmor and I believe that homework would be more effective if they gave us an assignment or two at the end of the week for practice and review, and then more if the student's grades reflected it.
