Greatest tenor vs Favourite tenor

Dear friends,

Although in my personal opinion Lauri-Volpi is the greatest tenor of the century (I posted my vote for him), My favorite tenor is Franco Corelli. Why did I vote for Lauri-Volpi and not for Corelli? Simply because the question is "Who is in your opinion the greatest tenor of the century?” Sometimes your favorite tenor is the one you believe to be the greatest, but sometimes, as in my personal experience, it does not happen like that. If the question were "Who is your favorite tenor?" I would have certainly voted for Franco Corelli. What I want to point out is that we should really evaluate if we are voting for our favorite tenors or if we are posting a vote for the tenor that we honestly consider to have been the greatest. From an objective and technical point of view, I am sure Lauri-Volpi is the greatest. From a subjective point of view I like more Corelli, and the emotions he can produce within myself. Same thing happens to me when I compare Kraus and di Stefano. I believe Kraus to have been a greater tenor. Kraus sung in great form almost till his death in 1999. His diction, style, and singing techniques in general, were above reproach. Regardless of all this, when I hear the young di Stefano, he can produce emotions and feelings Kraus does not produce within myself. I did mention this because our votes in this survey should honestly go in accordance to the question asked. As I stated before, many times our favorite tenor is the one we consider the greatest. But that is not always the case. I hope every vote already posted, it is in agreement with the survey question.

RE: Greatest tenor vs Favourite tenor

I think you did well in voting Lauri-Volpi even though your favourite tenor is Corelli. The question was asked in those terms: "Who is the greatest tenor of the century," meaning your vote would have to reflect, as you say, who you honestly consider to have been the greatest, not the one you prefer (although "in your opinion" would allow for some personal considerations or perferences as well. Now, which criteria you employ in such a consideration might be debated further (some virtues are already reflected in the choice of poll tenors). You mentioned one: Technical standard. And implicitly: Popularity.
