| Posted By: Rob Posted On: Aug 25, 2008 Views: 372 | How did they get back? I am not saying the moon landings were faked or anything but I have a question. Why is it that it took a monsterous great Saturn V rocket to get to the moon and only a very tiny little rocket to get back? I appreciate the moon's gravity is less but is the difference that great? |

It takes a tremendous amount of fuel to get into low earth orbit, just take a look at the Space Shuttle as an example of that, or any rocket that is launching a satellite. Once in orbit it does not take much fuel to get to moon, nearly all the journey is done just coasting, it only takes a few minutes of burn to get up to speed to get there. Coming back is simple. The moon's gravity is so weak it takes very little power to escape from it and the craft is soon caught by the earth's gravity and drawn home. In fact the main problem is slowing down using the earth's atmosphere to burn off the 25,000 mph speed. Hope that helps.
