In "The Elegant Universe" by Brian Greene, there is a claim that as the physics of a universe x times the Planck length in diameter are the same as those of a universe 1/x times the Planck length in diameter, a "big bounce" scenario is possible, where the universe appears to expand, contract and then expand again. Woohoo! Rebirth! Anyone else think this is a possibility? |
| Posted By: yicheng Posted On: Feb 23, 2003 Views: 272 | are you sure??? After reading such books as "The Big Bang Theory: what it is, how it happened and why it works" and seen some other documentaries on it, I would guess that the second of two possibilities will happen. It all depends on the initial force of the big bang; if it's less than some critical number then the universe's expansion slows, then stops, then the universe retracts into a Big Explosion and will eventually give rise to another big bang in a never ending cycle. However, it has been observed that the rate at which galaxies rush away from each other is increasing, so this means that the second possible ending is more likely. We keep expanding, until other stars are so far away it's pretty much a vast expanse of dark. And the stars blink out, one by one. I don't know, i haven't researched the big band in a while, i could be wrong. |
| Posted By: Stephen Hedding Posted On: Mar 29, 2003 Views: 263 | RE: How will it all end? very fascinating. I would just like to thank keith for really helping those with limited knowledge about energy and mass [such as myself] grasp very complex ideas. I myself find that the big bang theory is truley the most accurate and the most logical theory of the start of the universe. As to how it will all end, I, like everyone else, can only speculate. Although I tend to believe in the old saying "what goes up must come down." What i mean is that gravity will take effect on the universe eventually, and I believe that it will collapse into itself, returning to what it was before the big bang, a single point. Does anyone on here believe that the end will have anything to do with God, or any form of omnipotent being? I, for one, find that God provides the simplest explination of the universe, in that you can simply write off any problems with God in faith, for example, if God made everything, who made God? Well, one can just say he always was because he is God. One can't do that with science and the big bang theory. I don't know this is all over my head, but I just thought I would share my opinion on this great site. |

Ugh, my computer froze right as I hit submit comment, so I'm not sure if my previous comment went through or not, I don't think it did. First off, I would just like to thank Keith on this great site, you present a clear and easily understandable style of writing on a very unclear and complex subject. As to my beliefs on the end of the universe, I feel that it will most assuredly simply collapse upon itself, if it is going to end at all, but as Keith said, the Universe shows no signs of expansion slowing down. I feel that it is highly unlikely the Universe would end at all, to me, it seems that it may just go on forever, assuming entropy is somehow avoided. Does anyone believe in a religous ending for the universe? One of God destroying it all or something? I for one find a religous explination to be the most believable as any fallicies can simply be explained away as faith. For example, if God made everything, who made God? Well, one might say that God simply always was, and have faith. Im getting carried away, again, thanks for your very informative page Keith. |
| Posted By: Justin Posted On: Nov 30, 2004 Views: 199 | RE: How will it all end? maybe our minds are not advanced enough to even comprehend a beginning or ending. That is why we can't think of something coming from nothing. Or the universe lasting to infinity. Maybe their are answers to all of these questions, but our earthly logical minds cannot make it possible or make sense of it. |
