The veteran great tenor was a superlative expert of voices and remarked in 1955 that disorientation appeared to emerge in Di Stefano's voice who had a splendid debut mid 1940s as Nadir in The Pearl Fishers at the Rome Opera House. Lauri-Volpi further predicted that Di Stefano's abuse of "note spalancate" (opened notes) would lead to a premature career end unless he changed technique and went back to his natural style. Regretfully, the great tenor's prediction came true. Di Stefano persisted with the wrong technique and disappeared prematurely. |
