Carreras and Progress of Poll

Practically all tenors have by now received a vote, except for Alagna, which is slightly surprising, given the - in general - good reviews of his recent Cavaradossi for EMI. Further it is also surprising to see the new tenors polling ahead, like Cura and Licitra. Corelli in the lead is less surprising, however, a current 2nd for Carreras *is.*

Personally, I am fond of all Carreras' early renditions of "E lucevan le stelle," whether on complete recordings of Tosca or on recital discs and in the concert hall. His early recording for Philips under Sir Colin Davis (1976, if I am not mistaken) bursts with virility, with that open sound Di Stefano produced in his prime, exciting, but tolling for the voice and the result of Carreras' career was very similar to that of Di Stefano's indeed. The somewhat later recording for DGG with von Karajan is softer and more caressing, more desperate, more mature than perhaps his earlier, more proud, fearless Cavaradossi.

With all the negative publicity around Carreras in the latter part of his career, bearing in mind the 3 Tenors Circus and the very obvious vocal decay, it is a pleasant surprise that his very emotive, if far by technically flawless Cavaradossi, is remembered.

RE: Carreras and Progress of Poll

The great tenor Lauri-Volpi who lived in Spain for part of each year heard Carreras during a vocal competition held at the Liceo di Barcellona in 1972. The veteran tenor was 80 at the time and predicted that Carreras would have a splendid rise in the world of opera since lyrical tenors of quality were hard to find.
In fact, Carreras was acclaimed at La Scala soon after, singing in Ballo. However, Lauri-Volpi felt that Carreras had a tendency to open the sounds exposing himself to premature decadence, trying to emulate Di Stefano, a beautiful voice but wrong technique. Alas, Lauri-Volpi's prediction came true once more.
