Infinity in reality

Right, infinite sound? INFINITE SOUND! Personally I think mankinds creativity can go beyond our own realms of understanding, eg - say I was to focus on one hour of music for the next few years, adding and adding, until it was greater than I even knew.. Yes I know this is a finite equation, but if its greater than my own comprehension, is it not infinite? Doesn't this mean we can create an infinite world of sound? I have albums that I know I will never truly understand, but I'm going to try anyway, give up if you like :D I think this is one of the reasons why we are different to ze animals.

RE: Agreeance

Does anyone at all get it? There is no god but what we have made ourselves, if we ever want to be anything but animals that kill each other more effectively we have to look at a much much greater picture. THE MIND IS INFINATE.

RE: Infinity in reality

I think you are both right in a way, many things may be described as being infinite. My question though is can anything real, solid, something you can touch, be infinite?

RE: Infinity in reality

Time is infifity. There will never be an end in time. Our universe (remnance of the big bang) is only one of infinite explosions which happened at that very moment in time. So while you were reading this, there were an infinite number of other "big bangs" which occured times the amount of time it took you to read this. I'm running out of fingers to count, are you?

RE: Infinity in reality

I will give you an example of how infinity can not exist. Here is the example. Lets say you have 2 red books and 1 blue book and this pattern went on for infinity. Which one would you have more of?
The answer would be is that you would have infinite of both but the ratio of the books is 2:1. How can you have same of both if the ratio is 2:1. This little example proves that infinity can not exist.

This little example only proves you should listen to your maths-teacher with a little bit more attention.

RE: Infinity in reality

Oh yeah, that's a good point about listening to your maths teacher.
Mine taught me that each number is exclusive. There is only one number one.
He also taught me that 0.9 is 0.1 less than 1.
That 0.99 is 0.01 less than 1
That 0.999 is 0.001 less than one.
And so on.
You are so right, we should take note of what we were taught.

RE: Infinity in reality

Seems to me you can't put that 0.999'~ 1 debate
out of your head Keith.
Therefore, this little problem to please you.
We are going on a journey from 0 to 1 but this time without making any "jumps".We have to pass every real number one by one (which should be possible if each real number is exclusive).
We are free to choose our pass-(or count)rate.
How far would we ever get away from where we start?

RE: Infinity in reality

You failed to comment on what we were taught at school in my last post. Would that be because my argument is sound?

In order to answer your question please tell me how many real numbers there are between 0 and 1?

RE: Infinity in reality

Well, there are infinitely many between 0 and 1,and there are infinitely many between 0 and 0.1,
infinitely many between 0 and 0.01,and so on,and so on.....

THis might help to find out where the problem is.
Imagine a one-dimensional continuum,a part of a straight line if you want.Try to enlarge it in your mind,a few times larger,...infinitely larger.
It would never resolve into separate points,it would always remain thesame, boring continuum.

P.S. that maths-teacher comment was only meant jokingly against the once more abuse of the
word "prove".

RE: Infinity in reality

laurus,

Okay, If there are an infinite number of real numbers between 0 and 1 then obviously we would never get there if we had to pass each number step at a time. However I could select to stop at only the tenths, ie 0.1, 0.2, 0.3 etc. and would therefore arrive in only 10 steps.
What is the point in asking?

RE: Infinity in reality

That's right, you could get there in one step right
away also.
But I was just wondering how far one could ever get away without allowing for himself to make such
"steps" over more than one point at a time.
Sometimes such things can give me sleepless nights, because I would like to find out what's
the reason or cause it is so difficult to comprehend.
Ofcoure,I don't wish you thesame Keith.

Thanks,Keith.
