Time Dimension

I don't understand how time is accepted as a dimension. I'm sure it looks good in equations but that doesn't make it right. What if time is just a manmade concept... Or I'm I way off base here?

RE: Time Dimension

Time as a dimension only came to light with Einstein's theory of relativity. Yes it does fit the equations and yes that does mean it is not neccessarily the way it really is.
With any theory if the observations and predictions match the theory then the theory becomes accepted. However, as history shows, things change.
A new theory could be developed tomorrow that overturns Einstein's theory.
I don't know if you read my page 'What is time' but it is a complex subject and no one pretends to have all the answers.

I'm going to read it right now ;) thanks.

RE: Time Dimension

I have considered another theory about time. I have to admit, that IF this one holds, it will turn relativitity theory completely upside down, and probably also end any debate about eventually possible time travels back in time (except for the time dilation effect, of course).

Now, to the theory:

If the Big Bang theory is true, then the entire Universe, including time, came to existence here. However, since all of Universe is made up of some kind of matter, then why not time as well?

Decades ago, it was believed that neutrinos travelled with light speed. However, it seems to turn out, that it actually has mass, and thus cannot be able to reach that speed, only something close to this speed.

It is also known, that neutrinos pass through any (ordinary) matter, without interacting with it...even through the Earth.

What if neutrinos is the "thing" that makes up our time? They would then be "responsible" for any ordinary matter aging, it would also explain why there's a time dilation when the speed of matter increases (at the speed of light, it cannot keep up with the matter anymore) - and it explains why time slows down in the presence of matter (it simply slows down the neutrinos).

Maybe this is completely wrong, however I think it makes good sence, and it should even be verifiable in a lab, for example by slamming millions of neutrinos towards an atomic clock (which would speed up time), or by somehow stopping them (thus creating a time dilation).

If that happens, we would know that they're the ones "responsible" for the time passing.

As Morpheus says: "I do not believe it to be a matter of faith, it's simply a matter of time".

RE: Time Dimension

Einstein's theory does not, as widely believed, state that nothing can exceed the speed of light, it says that nothing can be accelerated beyond the speed of light. This means that there may be particles that travel faster than light speed and are unable to decelerate below light speed.

RE: Time Dimension

Well, okay - I don't know the relativity theory in details, however the interesting aspect here (from our point of view) is, that we cannot reach the speed of light (since that would require an acceleration to that speed).

What are your thoughts about my neutrino theory?
