Universe escape velocity?

As we know, the presence of matter creates a curvature in spacetime, which in turn leads to what we experience as gravity.

We've discovered that we're able to leave Earth's gravitational pull if we reach or exceed the escape velocity.

In theory, even the gravitational pull of a black hole could be overcome if the escape velocity could be reached.

If this is a fact, then why not the entire universe as well? It also have a gravitational pull, which in turn leads to the spacetime curvature of the entire universe. Could this have an escape velocity as well?

What if we could reach a tremendous speed, leave the universe and perhaps discover, that the universe is actually just one of many in a cluster of clusters of clusters of....

RE: Universe escape velocity?

The only problem with that is that we can never escape from the universe. This is not just a mechanical problem of reaching the required speed.
The entire universe, and of course everything in it, was created in the Big Bang and evolved from that. We are made of the same stuff as the stars, planets and the universe itself. We are a part of the universe. We cannot leave it because we are it.

RE: Universe escape velocity?

I would imagine that the escape velocity of the universe is the speed of light. However, that is probably the velocity of its expansion. Damn.

RE: Universe escape velocity?

Well, I don't think anyone can really answer that question, since noone has ever tried. It's probably impossible, but I think it's too easy to say, that just because we're part of something, we can't leave it.

I don't think the speed of light is sufficient, however.

RE: Universe escape velocity?

If you accept that exceeding light speed is possible.... But remember Keiths argument, even if you could travel outside the universe, you by definition would only expand it with your presence. You are part of the universe.

However, keep in mind that in order to leave, you do not need to obtain "escape velocity".

You just need a method of propelling your self away. If you had a rocket that could propel you at 60mph vectored away from the center of the earth, you would simply keep going farther away eventually your "escape velocity" would drop to 0.

The only reason we use escape velocity is so we can coast away. A practical method, but not the only means to excape from the Earth's gravational force.

However, in the ever expanding universe, which I believe is expanding at light speed...would be very hard to leave behind.

Why light speed, well that's the speed a gravational field propogates right? I believe our universe extends to the limits of its gravational field which will expand to infinity, if given infinite time.
