Posted By: Ridler Posted On: Jan 21, 2008 Views: 1856 | Initial Potential Energy Well, I'm not sure about this, Keith, but there may be a possibility that the Potential Energy of the Universe at T=0 was infinite, don't you think? I mean, if the Universe is expanding towards the infinite shouldn't initial PE be infinite? More: if the initial density tended towards the infinite shoudn't PE overcome it by being...infinite? Otherwise Big Bang would not be possible, don't you think? I'm not sure if I made any sense at all. I hope that you understood my question. |
Posted By: Keith Mayes Posted On: Jan 22, 2008 Views: 1846 | RE: Initial Potential Energy I'm not sure I have got you right, but at the moment of creation of the Big Bang the available energy, by definition, has to be infinite because it is all the energy there is in existence. Perhaps I have missed the point? |
Posted By: Ridler Posted On: Jan 22, 2008 Views: 1843 | RE: Initial Potential Energy Yes, I believe you've got my point right. Maybe, after all, there's something infinite in our Universe... So, what do you think? |
Posted By: Ridler Posted On: Jan 24, 2008 Views: 1832 | RE: Initial Potential Energy So?..........Any thoughts? |
Posted By: Keith Mayes Posted On: Jan 24, 2008 Views: 1828 | RE: Initial Potential Energy The term infinity when used in that concept does not mean true infinity, as in without end and of no limits, it simply means it is all there is. |
Posted By: Ridler Posted On: Jan 25, 2008 Views: 1826 | RE: Initial Potential Energy And how could you know if "all there is" (in this case, regarding Potential Energy) was not infinite? |
Posted By: Ridler Posted On: Jan 25, 2008 Views: 1825 | RE: Initial Potential Energy I mean, what are the reasons that lead you to believe that PE MUST have some fixed value? Why not being infinite? Can you prove something about it? |
Posted By: Keith Mayes Posted On: Jan 25, 2008 Views: 1820 | RE: Initial Potential Energy Why should it be infinite? Can you prove it? Clearly there is no definitive answer. |
Posted By: Ridler Posted On: Jan 25, 2008 Views: 1818 | RE: Initial Potential Energy Ok! Now we are getting somewhere... Neither can you prove that it isn't infinite nor can I prove you that it is, right? So, at least, we may agree that PE may, possibily/maybe, be infinite. Well, I think that this is an advance by comparison with all the other previous proposals. Now, let me elaborate on it a little further (as a matter of fact these thoughts express doubts): 1-Many physical variables (density, for instance) at T=0 tended towards the infinite, right? In order to overcome those variables, shouldn't initial PE be infinite? Otherwise, how could the Universe begin its expansion? 2-The Universe is expanding towards the infinite (probably). If that is the case, given that we don't know what's outside of the Universe, we can't just assume that "it is a void" without any form of resistance, can we? Well, if there is some kind of resistence (even if minimal) to the expansion of the Universe, shouldn't PE be infinite. Otherwise, it couldn't keep on expanding towards the infinite. (well, this is rather speculative stuff, but it just goes to show that we can't just presume that inertia, per se, does it role) I don't know...what do you think? |
Posted By: Keith Mayes Posted On: Jan 25, 2008 Views: 1814 | RE: Initial Potential Energy I'm off to the airport, back next Monday. |
Posted By: Ridler Posted On: Jan 25, 2008 Views: 1812 | RE: Initial Potential Energy Ok! So, then we'll talk about it! |
Posted By: Ridler Posted On: Jan 30, 2008 Views: 1799 | RE: Initial Potential Energy Hello?... Anyone there?... |
Posted By: Keith Mayes Posted On: Jan 31, 2008 Views: 1789 | RE: Initial Potential Energy Yes, I'm back. What do you want? |
Posted By: Ridler Posted On: Jan 31, 2008 Views: 1786 | RE: Initial Potential Energy Well, I wanted to discuss the two points I made about PE. I thought that it was clear. |
Posted By: Keith Mayes Posted On: Feb 1, 2008 Views: 1776 | RE: RE: Initial Potential Energy Anything that is within the universe, such as matter, gravity, energy, photons etc, can be described as being infinite simply because it is 'all there is'. In that sense the universe itself could be described as infinite. This does not however mean that the universe is 'without end', two very different meanings for the same word. Read my page on infinity, no point in me reproducing it all here when I have already described in detail and at length my thoughts on the matter. |
