Infinity

Keith,

I just read through all of the Riddler posts and found it pretty amusing. I agree with you that in order to be "infinite" there can be no limits so therefore time cannot be infinite since it had a beginning (according to the Big Bang). One problem I have though is that in order to without limit something has to be expanding continuously in both the forward and negative direction. But what about the upward and downward direction? For example, the ever increasing rope is clearly not "without limit" since it is bounded by heighth. Similarly, for something to be "truly infinite" wouldn't it have to be expanding continuously in both the positive and negative direction in ALL dimensions? This is interesting because popular scientific belief not is that the upper dimensions are all curled up on the sub-atomic level. In short I think I agree with you when you say that "nothing" is the only infinite. The infinite nothingness void the universe expanded into when it was created. Another thing I would like to mention is that if there was a "perfect observer" in the nothingess void would the universe still be a singularity? Since the nothingness is infinite no matter how large the universe grew it would still be infinitely small (making it a singularity). Do you think this is a possilbe way the Universe could be created--it can ever expand and grow but still technically be a "singularity" in the nothingless void of infinity? I just started thinking about this possibility after reading your page so don't be too harsh if it is totally off base : ).

RE: Infinity

You ask where I have been because you are aware that I usually respond to posts within 24 hours.

On December 13th I was an an emergency admittance to hospital with severe ongoing back pain, suffered on and off for years, coupled with the unpleasant fact I was unable to pee. I spent the next 3 weeks in bed flat on my back.
To cut a long story short it turns out I have prostate cancer and the cancer has spread to my spine causing it to press into the nerves in my spine. I have just finished radiotherapy and back home now taking medication. It seems they have it under control and I need to wear a corset while my spine heals itself as best it can.
So far so good I can only hope my condition continues to improve, or at least gets no worse.
At my age, 63, these things happen. I am lucky they seem to have got it in time, time will tell.
I am back!

RE: Infinity

From a singularity within a black hole to our universal singularity, to the singularity of all atomic structure, infinity is based in all things, naturally occurring, hardly observable; only in miniscule tidbits from grand scale to what happens in our minds, springing from what we deem, no thing.

There can not be no thing, only that which is infinite and so, impossible to define.
