A more likely explanation however is that having read back through my postings he was unable to find what he wrongly claimed I had said. I think he has just run away in embarrassment instead of admitting he made a simple error and moving on. |

| Posted By: Elliot Posted On: Nov 16, 2006 Views: 382 | RE: Is anything real, infinite In the assumption that the universe is expanding INTO something, is assuming that the universe has to expand outwards 3-dementionally. If anyone actually read the acrticle, it was theorised that the universe is expanding into itself, and not in 3 and 4 demensions, but rather in demensions that allow for such possibilities. In our perspective, it appears to be expanding outwards, since we exist in 3(4) demensions. As far as defininitions... Outerspace, is the space outside of earths atmosphere. Space, is the emptyness within a container. Time-Space, is the structure which makes up the 'fabric' of everything that is the universe. At least, this is my understanding of the definitions. Additionally, saying that the universe expands INTO something, is saying that SOMETHING is outside of the universe. It would make more sense to say that the universe simply expands. To say that there is nothing outside of the universe, would be saying that there is still something, since, depending on the context, nothingness is still something, in the terms of space-time. By definition, the universe is everything that IS. |
| Posted By: True Citizen of the World Posted On: Nov 30, 2006 Views: 376 | RE: Is anything real, infinite Megabrain, space is infinite or finite is not as yet known. It is widely felt in the scientific community that space is finite but unbound. However, we can't be very sure. Strings theory (now called M-theory) which is proposed as a replacement as well as an improvemnet over the Big Bang theory talks of multiple universes which have existed since ever (minus infinity). Large particle accelerators are being built in USA to seek evidence for M-theory. We have to patiently wait for answers. |
| Posted By: ric_wey Posted On: Dec 24, 2006 Views: 366 | RE: Is anything real, infinite Space is infinite. Universe is expanding because the intergalactic black energy is changing state. |
| Posted By: Bruno Posted On: May 22, 2007 Views: 339 | RE: Is anything real, infinite I think someone is forgetting one BIG issue about spacetime curvature: Now, we all know that the Earth curves, thus if we keep walking in one direction, we will reach our point of departure after a period of time. However, we're able to leave Earth by flying outwards at a speed higher than or equal to the escape velocity, which is strictly connected to the gravity pull and the space ship's own mass. Same goes for any planet, star or galaxy: if we can reach their escape velocity, we're able to break free of their gravitational pull. Even a black hole can (theoretically) be left, if some supercharged spaceship could reach it's escape velocity. (At a speed much larger than the speed of light, of course - I don't say it will be easy, just that SOME tremendous speed should do). Now, if the Universe itself is curved - because of the very same laws that apply to everything else, according to relativity theory - then the entire Universe should have an escape velocity as well. Of course, this speed should be tremendously larger than even the tremendous speed which is needed in a black hole, but as we can assume, nothing in the Universe is infinite, so this escape velocity should be finite as well. Does this make sense? (I dare not think about what would happen, if we actually left the universe at this tremendous speed - perhaps we could discover, that the Universe is actually just one of many in a cluster of Universes)....in a cluster of clusters of clusters of....... |

| Posted By: Keith Mayes Posted On: Sep 21, 2007 Views: 317 | RE: Is anything real, infinite Thank you for your contribution Charles. Well thought out and presented, it makes a pleasant change. Yes, you are right, I do say we cannot gain a full understanding of our universe from within our universe, no more than a computer can analyse anything but its own programmes. It's fun to speculate but we can never know the answer as to what, if anything, can be outside the universe. |
| Posted By: Charles Matthew Posted On: Sep 22, 2007 Views: 313 | RE: Is anything real, infinite Wow. Since the last post was from several months ago I wasn't really expecting a reply any time soon. I think it's great that you keep up with the site so diligently. I've really enjoyed reading your thoughts on various topics -kudos to you. |

| Posted By: frankie futhark Posted On: Feb 1, 2008 Views: 266 | RE: Is anything real, infinite Hello All. Please forgive me if my theory sounds ridiculous, I am only a plumber after all, after reading all your comments with interest, I decided to produce my own theory of the universe life and everything. Is it possible that the size of the universe has not changed since the big bang i.e. the size of an atom. and it is the material within it that is getting infinitely smaller, giving the impression to anything conscious within it, that its universe is expanding? |
| Posted By: ilai Posted On: Feb 15, 2008 Views: 236 | RE: RE: Is anything real, infinite Frankie, i am also far from being an expert on cosmology or physics, but personally i like pondering your idea. i have heard it said that the universe is not only weirder than we think, but weirder than we CAN think. (i believe that i got that from the PBS special on string theory?) anyway if that is true your thought goes a ways towards getting us into the realm of the "weirder than we can think". unfortunately, at this time, i believe the model for the universe being used considers the singularity that exploded into what we now see as an expanding universe as approaching infinite smallness. so, i am probably wrong, but i think that would exclude your thought experiment. also there would be the matter of the leftover microwave radiation to explain. still, yours is one of the most unconventional ideas i've read on here so far. but what would i know, i'm just a roofer? though that does put me closer to the heavens than a plumber... -joking. |
| Posted By: ZX9 Posted On: Mar 29, 2009 Views: 118 | RE: Is anything real, infinite Keith, I can see why you think it can't expand and be infinite, but if it is infinite then why can't it expand? Perhaps infinity merely fluctuates? How are we to know? Maybe it expands now detracts later? I disagree with your constant reference to the fact that it can't be infinite and expand--why not? If it is infinite it has no boundaries what so ever, therefore shouldn't the matter inside it move to however it wants? No boundaries=No rules. I'm not supporting MB necessarily, but I do say that the basis for many of your posts may need to be reconsidered. |
