WARNING: contents may "ruin" plot of FFVIII for those who have not played it before.

I'd say, from the limited number of new rpg's that I've had the pleasure to play, that there is not so much a problem that an rpg can become too complicated, it's that lots of rpg's are trying *too hard* to *appear* complicated. Thus, rather than a complex plot, they may well have a confusing one which is rather vague and annoying; and thus, when they could be developing complex characters, say, or moral issues, they will often try and pull a rabbit out of the hat, such as the famous no-I'm-not-an-evil-sorceress-I'm-actually-your-nanny-and-oh-by-the-way-h ave-you-heard-of-this-random-future-witch-called-Ultimecia-time-compress ion-yada-yada-yada manoeuvre. This isn't complex: it's just a random surprise and a bit stupid. Now I realise that this comment may have turned into more of a FFVIII bash than anything else, so I'll try to generalise:

Rpg's often try to replicate the excitement that a complex plot can generate by using cheap tricks and being confusing. What they need to do is become properly thought out, and then we might see a truly complex plot emerge. We can only hope....

RE: Other

Have you ever played Chrono Trigger? the plot in that tops most movies these days, has a strong sense of cohesion, and has some of the most intersting characters in any game.

RE: Other **Chronmo Trigger Spoil;er**

Here's what i don't get ablout Chrono Trigger. You go back into the ast. it's been a long time so I don't remember the names and such. Bear with me, this is at the beginning of the game. The girl supposedly is mistaken for her grandmother or something who was missing and since she is visiting from the future and everytone things she's her grandmother...they call off the search for her grandmother, resulting in the disappearance of the girl due to the fact that if her grandmother dies she will have never been born.

Right I understand the concept of paradox and all that. What I DON'T understand is why the girl disappears in the first place if the grandmother is STILL ALIVE. granted, the search may have been called off, but there is still plenty of time for her to be found.

So you send out your party to save her and you do and the girl reappears. Huh? She should never have disappeared. Her disappearance should have meant that the grandmother was dead. So there should have been noone to save. Unless of course Chrono were to go farter into the past to save her or something.

Logically it just doesn't make sense to me. Am I overlooking something?

Without interference from the future, the ancestor would have died.
