Gameplay > play time

Honestly, if a game takes 100 hours to do everything with, that's 100 hours of enjoyment (well, at leat 80 should be enjoyment, or you'd probably stop playing) But, a game that takes only 20 hours to beat is more appealing to play again. I'd almost never even consider replaying a game that took me over 75 hours to beat. I've beaten Super Metroid over 20 times, Mario RPG probably 15, and Zelda: A Link to the Past at least 12. They're all short, and still fun. If you add up the number of total hours from playing them, it would probably be between 30-55 hours. And I surely enjoyed every minute of them.

What should really matter is how well the game rolls out in that time. A game that rushes the plot isn't all that appealing, but a game that drags it on forever is even worse. And then there are those you feel like you're never playing. If 50% of a game is watching movies, and the other 50% is being lost, where does actual gameplay come in? When you replay it, 100% is watching movies, because you're no longer lost. And sometimes a bad movie isn't even worth watching a second time.

RE: Gameplay > play time

This is exactly what I like about older RPGs and newer ones with lightweight plots and straightforward gameplay. It's why FF7 (which seems to be long just for the sake of being long)was lost for a long time among Chrono Cross and FF Chronicles. I still haven't gotten back into it and probably will restart my game.

RE: Gameplay > play time

I agree with the replayability idea.I can finish Zelda 3 from the beginning in a day but that fact has never degraded it to my eyes.I can hung out in the game's regions for countless hours just enjoying freeing and exploring Hyrule. But it's also easy for me to get quickly through the game.Whereas it would take a lot of nerve to start FF VI or Terranigma (I've done it 3x though) from scratch. My point is you may enjoy a lengthy RPG for more hours but with small replayability value whereas short but interesting RPGs can be replayed time and time again. And I'm saying this because Magic Knight Rayearth for SNES was short, with a few battles (I just took once my time to level up) but it was more kind of a torture. Zelda is a long as you want to make it,it has magic and that means a lot
