What I think of FF...

We've come from sleeping Elven Princes and Crystals to cars and rocket ships. Here's my question: Where the hell did we go wrong?

I hate to say this, to diss all other FFs, but I loved FF6 with all my heart and soul. Terra my love.. how I wish you were real.. *Sigh*. Ahem. Anyway, as you can see, the new FFs concentrate heavily on graphics. Lets take a look at some key elements of the older games.

1: Crystals. Every game before FF6 had crystals in them. Except for FF2, I think. These were the cherished relic of the FF series. They first came into the frey of orbs, but shortly became Crystals.

2: Classes. Even FF6 had these. I play FF9 for them having classes and for an ok storyline. Remember how involved you were getting Fighter his equipment back on NES FF1? Maybe the dual ass kicking swords from FF2 and FF3? Yeah. I know. I miss it too. (I hate Sneider or whatever his name is of the freaking Pluto Knights! I want a knight that looks like CGI Fighter FF1 for PS.. bishies! Yay!)

3: Changing plotline. Lets face it, everyone lost countless sleep getting to Zozo to figure out who and what Terra really was. Why did SHE have magic? Well, we know. Cyan's family died, and he later encountered them on the Phantom Train. General Leo died with honour. Strago faced his fears, and Relm showed her courage. Shadow's past was revealed, and we know the deeper, darker side of poor Locke. We met Gau's crazy father, and experienced the death of Sabin's master. Everyone's past opened up to us in these older games, and it touched our very hearts to see their drama unfold. Instead of just "Go Out and Save the World!" like in FF1... we got to know each and every agenda of the characters. FF4 Golbeze and Cecil... we found out why Cecil couldn't kill Golbeze. We found out who the REAL enemy was. We experienced the heart tearing, but honourable end of Galuf. This is what makes the old FFs heartclenching classics.

4: Magic systems. I loved the Esper magic system in FF6. Buying magic was ok in FF5. FF7.. talk about freaking customization! Whoo! I hated drawing magic in FF8... pointless really. FF9 was pretty cool, reminded me a lil of FFT. Skill points and all when learning stuff.

5: Enemies. Who soiled themselves when they saw Kefka's massive final form? It showed us you have to level a lot of chars up if you wanna beat the damn game... not just your fav all-stars, kids.

6: Fanart inspiration. Who wonders what happened to Aeris and Sephiroth. I think a pic of saw of her tugging on his one wing, ad her with two was really cute! Did anyone think Cloud and Seph would make a cute Yaoi couple?

In short, Final Fantasy isn't what it used to be. It used to be about sharing the tragedy, the joy, the fears of the characters. How did everyone feel about Setzer before they knew about Daryl? Then after? So much we didn't know what each character hid behind their masks, only to SHARE what they felt. I never knew what to feel in FF8 or FF9. There was never much fear or tragedy. You didn't share the past with these people. Just the present. And it got boring running around everywhere just feeling ****ed at someone, like when that fat ass queen summoned the gate monster from FF5, Astos (Anyone notice that Astos is also the name for the Dark King in FF1? Maybe he was killed twice, then the darker forces exiled him to be the gate of eternal torment..?). Don't you agree with me? It's lost it's charm, flare, and beauty.

RE: What I think of FF...

I disagree with you on some of your points. I love FF VI, but I don't think that Final Fantasy has gotten away from its initial concept.....considering we weren't there when Square first came up with the idea....how do we know what they had in mind for the series? I think that the stories are just as involved and I can't find anything wrong with any of the FF's. As for them not being what they should be (as you put it: an escape from reality), I do think that they are what they should be.....good video games. I've "become attached" to every character in the Final Fantasy series as I've played them....but in the end, the story goes on.

RE: What I think of FF...

JosephCain your letter really made me shiver. So many touching scenes from the past...I think FF VII was really okay,FF VIII was a huge stray in my opinion.A friend of mine had his character level 80 early in the game and just because he couldn't find where to upgrade his weapons hi couldn't win a monster. And that early in the game. And its overall style..well nothing special to me.From the bit I've played IX it was really better than VIII but I don't have a truly formed opinion about it.As for the newest one I'll soon buy a PSII.And I'll probably start FF VI from scratch.thanks Cain (Legacy of Cain was a good game btw)

RE: What I think of FF...

I like all the FF series/games whatever you call them! But i really liked FF X and i am sure i'll enjoy FF X-2 even if the doesn't focus so much on fantasy rather on technology, but i don't care about that as long as the story is nice...
