Posted By: Pen Posted On: Apr 14, 2003 Views: 2674 | Pen Poll While the Parker 51 is definately the better perfomring pen, especially over time and especially in the Aero models, It is the Sheaffer that is the most stimulating to use. You handle it and it extends the tip..... |
Posted By: Mary Plante Posted On: Apr 15, 2003 Views: 2653 | RE: Pen Poll I have one 51. It is a classic. It is dependable. It is BORING. I won't buy another. I have 2 Snorkels: one triumph nib, one feather touch. I love them both. The triumph nib pen draws comments. It fascinates even non-pen people. I want MORE. |

I have three 51's and a couple of 21's. It goes to show what a well-built, finely tuned pen the 51 is, considering the 21 is roughly the same design by the same manufacturer. The 51's are a joy to use. I have a couple of Sheaffers but only one classic - a Touchdown Imperial - so am not able to judge, but I agree with the previous comments that the Sheaffer has more "Oooomph" in the visual stakes. |
Posted By: John Smithfield Posted On: Sep 16, 2003 Views: 2565 | RE: Pen Poll Have both kinds, several of each... Unfortunately, I fix my pens and the snorkel mechanism is an absolute nightmare, compared to the simplicity and reliability of the Aerometric in my 51s (and 21s). That said, I carry normally one 51 and a PFM V... JS |
Posted By: trzesnk Posted On: Oct 22, 2003 Views: 2535 | RE: Pen Poll Sheaffers are great writters. I have many triumph models, love to which comes from my father's pen. I have used it in the schooltimes, and falled in love when one evening I found "my" Sheaffer at a vintage pen exhibition. Snorkel is a little bit to thin for my hand, and to complicated in construction.I prefer Touchdown, especially first year manufacturing model 1949. This is a winner for me. |
Posted By: grouse Posted On: Jan 17, 2004 Views: 2467 | RE: Pen Poll sheaffer nibs are so versatile- and the engineering of the snorkel ie clean nib is unsurpassed The snorkel range are a bit thin, but the PFM is wonderful. My PFMIII goes everywhere- and an added bonus is that my colleagues can actually read what I've written... |
Posted By: ClintnTx Posted On: Sep 6, 2004 Views: 2224 | RE: Pen Poll Back in the early 50's, my best bud in high school was a pen [& car] nut, & he was enamored of the Sheaffers. I had access to my mother's Parker 51, & rapidly we developed a camraderie around the whole area of which pen was best. My school pen was a Parker 21, & I later was given a Sheaffer Sentinel Snorkel set, which I kept for many years. I recent times I have begun to collect pens, & take great delight in all my Parkers & all my Sheaffers, but when it comes to value, I lean toward the 51. Improbable as it sounds, I find the Parker 61 extrenely sexy. To own one is to caress it as one writes with it. My bud, alas!, is no longer on the planet to enjoy our mutual interest. |
Posted By: Free Citizen Posted On: Sep 7, 2004 Views: 2222 | RE: Pen Poll My only experience with the 51 is one that belongs to my father. A fine nib, it writes smooth and is reliable and dependable. The sac will hold a lot of ink too. I have never encountered a Snorkel but from what I have seen, it is a technical marvel. I am attracted to it and I intend to have one. Preferably with a Triumph nib. As I don't have both the pens on poll here, given a choice, I would take a Snorkel. |
