BELL and BBW

I miss our powerfull magazines. I was a model in BBW magazine. There were 4 winners of the BBW model search in 1999/2000. From there I worked on the show "The Parkers" as a feature/exrta for almost 4 years. I'm now working towards an acting career.

Fashion options for Plus sizes

The lack of truly trendy fashion spreads could be one factor in the demise of the plus mags. The fashion options for plus size women is minimal. Sure there are companys designing for the plus size woman...but...why are they designing unflattering frumpy clothing.

I am creating a plus size line of clothing for myself and every woman who has wished she could buy the same clothes found on the celebrities in the skinny magazines. The policy of my company is to design always remembering that the plus size woman reads the same magazines, watches the same TV shows, likes fashion, newness, color, and wants to be just as fashionalbe as everyone else.

Anyone who is interested in getting updates of our debut line may email me their contact info to be kept in the loop. Also feel free to tell us what you feel is missing in plus size fashion at

Keep hope alive ladies!

Try Real Woman Magazine

I was a such a fan of BBW and Radiance magazines. They both featured woman of all plus sizes, not just the smaller end of the spectrum like Mode did. I could realistically imagine myself looking as good as the models in BBW and Radiance since the clothing they wore would hang the same way on me. Unfortunately, I never had the chance to read Belle.

I entered a modeling competition sponsered by Mode and I noticed that their judges seemed to dismiss all of the entrants larger than a size 16, including me. They only seemed really interested in the size 14s and smaller. Then I did some surfing online and found the contest was sponsered by a supposedly "plus-size modeling agency" but they only had models up to size 12! When I subscribed to Mode and read it I noticed it was extremely rare to see a model over size 14 in their mag. Being a size 20-24 most of my life I couldn't relate because they all had perfect hourglass figures, not the usual lumps, bumps, and curves most plus-size women have. The clothes were also too expensive most of the time.

Anyway, there is a new magazine called Real Woman. It has women of ALL sizes, shapes, colors, etc... it's worth looking at. These are women I can relate to because they are not some airbrushed skinny-minnie. If you want a magazine to last you have to be a vocal supporter of it. Make sure everyone knows about it. Give people gift subscriptions and pester your local bookstore to carry it. Money is the reason most new mags fail, so as much support a mag can get the better.

Also, it helps to write to the editors as voice your opinions and ask to see designers who do plus-size. As my mother always said , "the squeaky wheel gets the grease." Too may of us are complacent about what the editors feed us. If you pay for the mag, you have th eright to ask to see what you want to see or take your money elswhere.

Another mag for younger, hipster types is Bust. I've noticed that their models are not your typical uber-glamour-puss types like Cosmo has. Be warned though, if your taste runs very conservative it may not be for you.

Quick thought

This whole thing got me thinking. A print magazine is extremely expensive, but a good online one would be an excellent option. Low overhead cost and all that stuff.

Why they fail?

Hi Gals,

I have worked for the media sector for 23 years. The reason why these magazines do not not succeed is that they are not financialy viable enterprises. It's a matter of economics. The reason why figure is out there is that the Bryant group is financing it. It is not a self sustaining magazine by any stretch of the imagination. Sad but true. There are enterprising people out there however, maybe oneday somebody will crack the code and make it happen.

Missing Mode

I have to agree with the comments posted up here, I was a Mode subscriber and I was (still am) very upset when they went away. Mode was truly the In-Style type fashion magazine for plus size women. As a matter of fact, several of the covers I liked so much I put them in picture frames and they are hanging in my sewing room.

Many people have mentioned Figured magazine, and while I guess it's ok, there is no comparison between Mode and Figure. Figure is really just a big advertisement for Fashion Bug, Lane Bryant and Catherine’s. Mode didn't focus on one designer or store; it featured beautiful clothing from all over.

Missing Mode And Grace

Truly dissapointed in the absence of these 2 magazines. You were our Vogue Magazine for the Plus Size Women. I am a former Plus Beauty Queen and I cannot believe that there is nothng on the shelves for Plus Size Women. I travel back and forth to New York and nothing. Figure Magazine is out there but they do serve the larger women that are above 5'9 tall. I hope we get something soon

WHY NO PLUS MAGAZINES!!!

IT's utterly ridiculous that there is only 1 plus-sized magazine in this country ("FIGURE"). Full-figured women are the majority in this country!!! Why can't we sustain a plus-sized fashion magazine???? I literally cried when I found out Mode was being discontinued...it was fantastic! A true beauty and fashion mag but featuring beautiful full-sized women. Why are only skinny models getting work and being featured in magazines?!?!?!? What a shame!
