best studio reggae album ever

Chill Out is the best studio reggae album ever made, period. It exudes a unique sophistication and subtlety that is simply unmatched in the history of the genre. Yes, that includes Bob Marley's albums as well. Even after nearly 30 years, I almost always find something new whenever I listen to it. A unity and identity of opposites: it brings together both sparseness of instrumentation with numerous overlays, crispness with dub effects, tight engine-room rhythms with a jazz-like openness, the list goes on ... For example, Mondays combines a bass line that pulls the rhythm back and a drum line that accelerates it, both at the same time ... pure genius!! Yes, in the previous album, Red, Sly and Robbie cut loose a bit more, and the succeeding album, Anthem, was a commercial hit. But 3 decades later, the timeless genius of Chill Out stands out as something in a class of its own. This effort also provides the foundation for The Dub Factor, arguably the best dub album of all time. Sly and Robbie really outdid themselves on this one ... Seven stars!
