| Posted By: Richard T Posted On: May 4, 2006 Views: 1496 | Rifts: not just hack n slash and repetition I have been playing and games mastering Palladium Books products for 20 years. I have played other games and originally started out with D n'D. Of all my years i will say to those people who think that all that ever happens in Rifts is hack n slash and many O.C.C/R.C.C's are repeated under a different title, i greatly disagree. Heres why: Games become hack n slash because of 2 factors, lazy GM'ing and players with lack of imagination. Rifts was designed specifically to get away from hack n slash and repetition by giving both GM and player a vast amount of gaming options. Not just to be tied to picking a dwarf or elf, fighter or wizard but a whole host of O.C.C's and R.C.C's. As it says on the cover, "infinite possibilities, limited only by your imagination".!!! Some would say that there is repetition in some of the O.C.C's. Okay, lets look at these four: From the main rulebook: Ley Line Walker, Ley Line Rifter (from the Ultimate Edition), The Vanguard Translocator (from the Burb's/Chi-Town adventure-sourcebooks) and the Vanguard Mage (CS Wars 3), actually quite a few of the Vanguard characters are not too disimilar. I almost forgot the Russian Ley Line Walker (Mystic Russia WB). Compare these O.C.Cs in playtest as a collective group and they actually would work well with one another. The reason being that each is FOCUSED in a particular branch of the same school of magic. The Ley Line Walker is essentially seen as Rifts version of a run-of-the-mill wizard but the other sub-sets to this benchmark wizard gives new play and idea options. They help players to focus their character in a more finite way, focusing on a specific skill or technique in-play. Example, 'teleportation hitchhiking' for the L.L.Rifter is an amazing skill that the other sub-sets will probably not have (depending on the GM) and the Translocator in its pursuit of magic can ONLY select spells from the given list as well as any temporal magic spells. It's all about streamlining and these sub-set O.C.Cs do that. Most L.L.Walker players will want to accumalate as many spells as possible thus gaining knowledge of many, master of few and with so many spells will be hard pressed to come up with the right spell quickly to deal with a situation. Whats this to do with hack n slash? Well, if a player is focused on an archetype and role-plays away from 'power-mungering-overkill' (and i've known a few), they will have a much more interesting game. The skills they have will make the player more part of the team because the other players will rely on that team mates skill(s) to counter a given situation. That in turn draws the players into teamwork rather than shooting their way out of everything. Flip the coin and have all the players be MERC's and every player will have a different idea of a merc. Here there are lots of sub-sets but they all focus on different parts of the merc world. Look at the 'Predator' movie. Arnie and his gang are all mercs, but they all have an integral part to play, each having different skills, weapons preference and PERSONALITIES. In the film they get split up, picked off one-by-one but as a tight unit at the beginning they are flawless. It is down to the GM then to give players these ideas and for players to think outside the box. Rifts is designed for this type of role-playing. As with the merc/Arnie-Predator scenario the same applys to our wizard friends mentioned earlier. Finally, look at the Tolkeen/CS War. If all the wizards had been just L.L.Walkers and the CS had just Grunts and nothing else, the War would never end because it may well of been a stalemate, no VARIETY you see! I should really get out more!!! hahaha. Seriously, i am happy to chat with other fans so email me on look_nofurther2004@yahoo.co.uk for any conversations about RPG's, Rifts and Palladium Books in general. Richard T |

| Posted By: brian hosford(pirate) Posted On: Oct 25, 2005 Views: 1943 | i love RIFTS but.... I love RIFTS but i am tired of seeing the same occ and rcc repeated with a different wording. And on another note i run a lot of epic campaigns and i would really like to see more very powerful occ/rcc(possibly add on classes I.e.prestiege classes introduced into the rifts system. This is mainly because the players I run in my games have been playing for years(multiple) so they have a previous knowledge of the basics of gamepay and are looking for something more...I mean I have a lot of r.c.c.'s/o.c.c.'s that are incredibally strong but at the same time they are ballanced unlike so many of the fan created classes. It seems that pa\layers and g.m.'sant super chaEcters to play or run as n.p.c.'s and forget that the whole oint of the game is conyayed through subtelties and little hints in the story line and not just hack and slash action continouslly. so aside fron my lttle rant and rave if other people have balanced (i.e. not uber-characters that are godly and nneigh invulnerable) r.c.c.'a/o.c.c.'s that they are proud of for being balanced and made faiirly i would love to see a copy of them. I will take examples at hjb7791@yahoo.com and will coment on the ones that I think are FAIR. others will be ignored not because i dont think that your idead has merit but because i don't think that it will work on a epic scale that embodies fairness is concerned. | Posted By: Ida Posted On: Sep 25, 2004 Views: 1922 | I just found this site Hey I just found this site and I think it is really nice to still see Palladium stuff still around. I personally play about 11 seperate systems but Palladium and 2nd edition AD&D are my favorites. My husband got me into palladium when we were just friends and we still get a kick out of all the palladium books and reference material. I hope everyone out there continues to play and make new things to expand the worlds. Thanks everyone! |

| Posted By: Fred Posted On: Nov 23, 2003 Views: 1987 | Hunter come back!! Hunter I want you to know that i'm a big fan. Thank you for keeping this site updated. I am currently gm'ing a rifts game with my son (12) and a few of his friends. My son and I constantly browse the web together in search of some good rifts material. Its good to know there are still good humans out there seeking the satisfication of satisifying (as my great uncle always says, he occasionally plays with us) As far as hack and slash rifts... i voted that i don't care because rifts is perfect!!! every time i pick up a book i almost cry thinking about not only the excellent material published in them but the hundreds (once millions, but then came dungeons and dragons 3e) that keep the traditions still alive. I browsed your entire site and love it!! Although i am deeply offended by the mp3's (as i am a tad overweight myself) but over all great site, rifts till i die!! |
| Posted By: Caleb M. Posted On: Nov 9, 2003 Views: 1515 | That was kinda rude. Man Hunter, that was kinda rude. Hey all, you should all sign the guestbook telling Hunter how big a jerk he is. :P But seriously, it's been a while since I've even looked at this site, I didn't know anyone still came. Cheers to all that still find anything useful on the site. So go post here and post in the guestbook! |
| Posted By: Hunter S. Posted On: Nov 7, 2003 Views: 1502 | Nobody wants to know Who cares what you dummies think about whether rifts is hacknslash. What really matters is the fact that nobody has signed my guestbook for a long long time. If you feel like becoming dumber, then feel free to keep voting on this dead topic. Otherwise, save your soul by signing the guestbook. Hunter |
| Posted By: mark Posted On: Oct 23, 2003 Views: 1098 | the big picture and the GM Yeah sure thing about it getting pretty hack and slash but as a DM I let the players decide on which way a story unfolds sure I drop hints of under handed doings and politics into the picture and I always tell my players that you get more experience by thinking than just killing. |
