| Posted By: Jaleta Jafero Posted On: Oct 19, 2003 Views: 766 | Impressive plan to fight terrorism One of the issues PM Meles discussed in his Report to the House of Peoples' Representatives(Walta, Tekemt, 1996 Eth. C.- in Amharic) is the fight agains terrorism. He has certainly grasped the strategy that should be put in place to effectively up-root terrorist organizations from Ethiopia. Even if it is evident that terrorism cannot succeed to distabilse the country, it adversly affects our utilisation of the country's limited resources. PM Meles said the approach to up-root terrorism is multi-sectoral involving all law enforcement institutions (the police, the court system, the security) and their officers and the public at international, national, regional, sub-regional and local levels. As indicated by the PM, creating an institution specialising in detecting and preventing terrorism, and once it occurs, in investigating and catching the responsible and producing them to justice is imperative. Again, as indicated by the PM, a comprehensive legislatin for the function is essential. We are witnessing that terrorists are becoming more sophistcated in planning and realising their objectives. What happened in the USA and other countries with a relatively higher level of capacity to detect terrorism shows it is easy to succumbed to their plots. Ethiopia's record in fighting terrorism is not bad. It has succeeded to foil a plot to massacre a head of state in its capital. It has contained terrorist acts of organizations like the OLF, ONLF and others to an annual event. This does not, however, mean that Ethiopians are sufficiently protected. The recent infilitration by Eritrean terrorists and spies to Ethiopia has created fear on the population. Its noteworthy that terrorism in Ethiopia could be devastating since countries like Eritrea and Somalia who have a histrory of hate to everything Ethiopian could act in a great way. One recent indication of organizations working for the interest of Eritrea is the so called Council of Leaders of United Liberation Forces of Oromia (ULFO). In its meeting held from Oct. 10 - 14, 2003 confirmed its commitment to stand with Eritrea at this difficult moment for Ethiopia and Ethiopians. ULFO is essentially OLF combined with one or two faceless-exiled-Oromo-men organisations determined to work for the interest of Eritre, their sponser in terrorism. One of the points of their resolution was the following. "The border ruling made by the International Commission at Hague should be respected for the sake of peace and stability for the peoples in Ethiopia and the region. The TPLF is preparing itself for another round of "border" war. Therefore, ULFO calls upon the Oromo people to be cautious not to fall victim to this round of TPLF evil deeds and refuse to involve in any war that the TPLF ignites." No one than an enemy would say this at a time Ethiopia rejected the boundary Commission's decision. As PM Meles said Ethiopia will not go to war with Eritrea unless invaded. If Ethiopia is invaded by Eritrea, that will be the end of Eritrea and all terrorist organisations that it sponsers. To avoid such a disaster, Eritrea will not engage Ethiopia but use agents like OLF, ONLF and others to conduct its proxy war. We should not forget that Eritrea is and will continue to be the capital of anti-Ethiopia terrorists. It is evident that a preparation is in order. One essential fact PM Meles referred to as a means to fight terrorism in Ethiopia is the prevalence of democracy and good governance. These two core principles combined with the legal effort to detect, prevent and punish terrorism in Ethiopia will help improve security and safety in the country and enable all Ethiopians to focus on development. |

The so called OGADEN NATIONAL LIBERATION FRONT (ONLF), today, 20 October 2003, following the OLF, its comrade-in-arms in terrorism, issued a statement testifying its loyality to the Eritrean government (see Ogaden Online News). It said "Ethiopia should abide by the boundary ruling". The objective of OLF and ONLF is to get some political benifits out of existing tension between Ethiopia and Eritrea. They think the best situation for them is if the two countries go to war because that may lead Ethiopia to divert some resources from the fight against terrorism. With it, the Ethiopian government's attention may shift to finish the war it started with Eritrea. This they believe will give them an opportunity to expand their terrorist activites in the country. What they don't know is Ethiopia will not go to war with Eritrea every five or ten years and waste resources. If Eritrea starts war this time, it will learn a long lasting lesson that no war is possible or essential with Ethiopia. Eritrea knows her capasity and possible outcome of another war with Ethiopia and, in most likelihood, will not try it. It is a fact that Eritrea cannot win any war with Ethiopia. Because OLF and ONLF know that war with Ethiopia cannot bring any benifit to Eritrea, and because Eritrea has no choice but to opt to peace, they have chosen to that the Boundary Commission's decision be respected. They know that since Ethiopia rejected the decision of the Commission and declared it null and void altogether, the only thing that can happen is economic sanction. Their belief is economic sanction can stall the development programs in the country and create fertile ground to more recruits to terrorism. That chaos and anarchy is the political base of organisations like OLF and ONLF is proven to us in 1991/1992 and subsequent years. In order and peace, they will not get anything. The fact of the matter is, however, OLF's and ONLF's siding with Eritrea will further marginalize them. The tension between Ethiopia and Eritrea is building unprecidented level of nationalism in Ethiopia. Ethiopians of all religions, ethnic groups and political orientation feel victimizes by the Eritrean exploitation, invasion and deceat. More than anything else, they are unhappy about the boundary decision. It is unfortunate for the OLF and ONLF to run in head-on crash with this tide. We hope the adverse effects of such a stand will be felt by these organisations in no distant futuer. Sooner or later, Ethiopia and Eritrea will solve their problems peacefully. We feel that it is in Eritrea's interest to settle the boundary problem through bilateral talks and work to improve her relations with Ethiopia. Eritreans will not benifit economically or otherwise from OLF and ONLF as they have nothing to deliver. And the Eritrean government very well knows that OLF and ONLF are incapable to transform Ethiopia's political landscape as TPLF and EPLF did. It knows that they are just incapable. Ethiopians expect the Ethiopian government to make cessation of support to terrorism by the Eritrean government one of the preconditions for normalizing relations with that country. Eritrea should not expect to have a relationship with Ethiopia while conducting its proxy war with a clearly set out objective of destroying her. When peace prevails between the two countries and the Eritrean government comes to choose between Ethiopia and OLF and ONLF, it will simply say Ethiopia. It can't afford to say otherwise. OLF and ONLF will then be left in the cold not to come out again. |

The similarities are staggering. TPLF was once claiming to fighting a dictatorship to free the oppressed people of Tigray, and OLF is saying the samething for a while now. TPLF used the same guerrilla tactics to harrass the DERG regime that OLF is using today.TPLF was a partner of the then ELF but my Gosh OLF and ELF getting together that is bad news.TPLF once claimed not granting Eritreans their right to self determintion is equivelant to slavery.The last time I checked OLF is looking for the same sweet deal Eritreans got.I can go on and on but the fact remains the same. These are organisations who claim to fight for a particular tribe's right but in truth they only want power and preeminence over others. The only reason the current Weyane regime is singing a different tune is because today they are the insiders. They are the once who got the power and they see OLF and other tribal organisations treatening their existance. I can easily say here, what is good for the goose is good for the gander as the cliche goes, but I won't. I am an Ethiopian patriot, maybe a bit too optimistic but damn I don't want it any other way. I say to my lovely ethiopian people let us build a nation that is inclusive and tolerant. Let us build a multi party system based on ideas not on blood line. Let us end the tribal politics that dominates our thinking. Maybe this is a wishful thining but I dream of the day this ideal comes true. |

What all neftanyas are doing at the moment is destroying what they have built in the last 100 years. They always dream of the past such as a dream like this, Haileselasse will come and rule the country, then they can exploit the others poor and hungry Oromos', those hungry Amaras' and naturally unlucky Tigrai. The neftanyas didn't even recoganise the suffering of their ancesestor in Gonder, Gojam and North showa. They only know how to cheat others and live luxury life at the expense of the poor.
