Go to Nazareth -with pleasure

Who created Addis Abeba and built it over a century to what it is today? Please say Oromos and make me laugh. Addis Abeba was created by the then existing Ethiopian government. It created the city because it needed a sit of government which was essential for running its activities. There was no need for negotiation with settlers on the land becuase creting a city for governmental purposes was legitimate. Addis Abeba was created for diverse public purposes which it is still discharging. No particular people can establish exclusive ownership title over Addis Abeba or, for that matter, over any other city in the country as cities and towns fall in the public domain. Cities and towns in Ethiopia, as everywhere else are results of labour, money, knowledge, time, etc. of every Ethiopian.

If OLF and its affiliate groups claim that Addis Abeba is an Oromo city, they should be told the bitter truth. The fact that Addis Abeba falls in area called Oromia does not make it Oromo. Cities in Oromia are not Oromo as they have no particular nationality. They are built by multitude of Ethiopians and they are public property. See the population statistics to learn the reality. This is not unique for Oromia but true for every city and town in every region in the country. Mekele, Baher Dar, Awassa, Dire Dawa, Dessie, Gore, Nekemte, Asaita, etc. etc. are cities and towns of all Ethiopians. They have mixed populations.

Land is the property of the Ethiopian people the ownership of which is exercised through the federal government. It is public property for the last thirty years and any claim based on ancient ownership land counting hundred years or so is laughable. The Oromo, Amhara, Tigre, Afar, Gurage, Gambella, Debub, etc. peoples have "lost" their ownership of land due to nationalisation by a government in power and that has not changed today. Land is therefore public domain under government control allowing it to make legally enforceable decisions. It has an exclusive right over urban and rural land. The people with use right will have to listen to what the owner tells them. By the way, OLF was the champion of land nationalisation in Ethiopia only to haunt it today.

Because of the reason why Addis Abeba was created namely for running governmental function (for all Ethiopians including Oromos) and the public nature of the undertaking, we don't see any reason that the effort should be considered as harmful by any particular ethnic group. Furthermore, in light of the contribution of all Ethiopians to build Addis Abeba, we don't see any reason for any particular people to establish ownership title on it. As land is a public domain, no particular ethnic group has the right to refuse orders from the owner - the government. In fact, there is no convincing reason for Oromia's Regional government offices not to go to Nazareth. When they are told by the government to do so, they must listen to it.

The Oromia regional constitution might have stated that Addis Abeba is Oromia's capital. But, the federal constitution specifies that Addis Abeba is the capital of Ethiopia. Addis Abeba cannot be the capital of two governments. The federal constitution also says that land belongs to the people (i.e. to the government). OLF and its affiliates cannot raise the Oromia constitution to challenge the federal constitution. As we know it, if a contradiction appears between the Federal and regional constitutions, the Federal constitution prevails over the regional constitution. Again, this is what is specified in the Federal constitution. Oroma's constituiton with respect to Addis Abeba should be null and void if a contradiction has appeared. After all, it was OLF itself itself that

We wish you all the best in Nazareth, another city that belongs to all Ethiopians. How about restoring the name Nazareth in place of Adama?

Later.
