Ten Countries make Waves Over the Nile Waters
Chistain Science Monitor16,2004
Comment: Imperial Intrigues Still at Work!
When you consider the issues of who owns and be in use of the Nile waters, there are mostly four nations, Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda that matter most. Other disadvantaged nations included in the equation contribute little or no water resources to the flow of the River; hence the redrawing of the old colonial treaty would have less impact on their economies. It appears they have been included in the stake so as to beef up the current positions of Egypt and Sudan, by belittling the negation powers of the four nations – Ethiopia, Uganda, Tanzania and Kenya. The more nations you have assembled in a roundtable to negotiate the easier it becomes to buy off one against the other to preserve desired outcomes.

Likewise Ethiopia ought not to enter in to discuss as to the validity of the 1929 or/and 1956 Treaties between Britain (representing itself and its colonies – i.e. Tanzania, Kenya etc) Egypt, and Sudan. Ethiopia was not part of it and should waste no time reversing it. You cannot live in a day you are not born in!

Again, Because of the nature of the organization set up to deal with the issues, Ethiopia has been drawn in to wallow in issues of past colonial treaties, inevitably compelled by the other riparian nations by logic of events, only to miss her own valid position of carrying out independent projects to serve her own interests that is not tied in to allocated proportionate quotas which takes in to account other nations needs.

Further, if you see the lakes that contribute to the making of the Nile River, that of Ethiopia – Lake Tina – is so small, a spec, it could not be put down on any map compare to Like Victoria, which appears as big as an arm fist by any measurable scale. And yet 85% of the water that makes Niles River comes from this tinny spec of lakes. However, Ethiopia has never been given any special considerations in terms of its contributions by way of pay back by the powers that are behind these treaties.

The question is: at this point Ethiopia may not have the strength and/or resources to go against superpowers machinations. But Ethiopia can reject be party to a negotiation and others deals that undermines its own interest until such day its sons and daughter are strong enough to claim what is theirs. To do this you need to have determined and upright leaders not those who are bedaub by wallowing in filthy lucre of the West. We do not expect any thing good coming out of these closed door negotiations as much as we do not have for anything else under the current climate.
