Hate to be the one to break it to you, the Germans use to buy much more from Ethiopia. Well over 20% of exports in 1998. 138 of 560 million US.

Recently:

Djibouti 13.4%, Germany 11.4%, Saudi Arabia 6.9%, Japan 6.8%, Italy 6.4%, US 5.1% (2003 est.)

Djibouti as your main trader and tourist $$$.

Germans drink lots of beer, Ethiopia is starting to produce much more beer. It goes with coffee quite well.

I think, correct me if I am wrong, that it is well known that the Amhara and all the "native highland Ethiopians" see themselves as having closer links to Europeans and therefore BETTER than lowlander Ethiopians. The highlanders have been ruling the land for a long time.

The question, I think, is why? Do they need some kind of justification? If that is in fact the mentality then productivity is being hurt for sure.

HIGHLANDER VS. LOWLANDER, IS THIS A NEW DIVISIVE TRICK ?

FYI MOST ETHIOPIANS(80 90 %) ARE HIGHLANDERS THAT MEANS THEY LIVE AT ALTITUDES OVER 1000 or so meters.

NO. The highlander, lowlander was really meant as Amhara, Tigray originally. The native Ethiopians. They have always thought as themselves as more European therefore better how crazy is that.

I think you are correct thought in Ethiopia thinking about Ethiopian development Not external. I would not divide skin color. Ferenji are Ethiopians also. The UN also included African Union later...possibly because they know how to resolve their problems better.

Trust me, I am a strong believer in Ethiopians doing not external.

i don't follow, ge'ez. i don't think highlanders had thought of themselves as "more european" as they thought of themselves as "more civilised" than the lowlanders, and in many cases the ferenjoch themselves.

and wow, am i the only one getting tired of this "autoedit" medrek has done with a few words or what?? beyond annoying...

Yes, I am not quite sure on that highlander part. I got that information on this Web site. I have read this a few times now. The ruling classes from 2 provinces are more European.

About colonization, if you go back as far as you want, the whole world has been colonized by Ethiopians, if we are all descendants.

America does support Ethiopia. But America cannot die for Ethiopia. Ethiopia has been a weak ally and did not use the opprtunities given to her by America. Americans cannot think or fight for us. What they can do help us when we approch them with alternatives.

America opposed the Mengistu dictatorial regime, which is right. America is neutral vis á vis the ethinic federalism gang of TPLFEPRDF. Since the TPLFEPRDF has an armyand holds political, America has a relationship with Ethiopia. If a new government comes to replace Meles Zenauuwi, America will support the new government. Generally speaking America supports Ethiopia. But no ethiopian leader upto now has been able to wield a meaningful cooperation with America.

Ethiopia will have to support America and Europe. They are our strategic allies, eventhough there has been some misunderstanding in european and american quarters. Russia is also our staunch ally. Our relationship with Japan, Korea and China has to be seen.

The good thing is that you admit is is only a rumor. I do not see how the inclusion of this statement helped your argument at all since it is not based on fact and reality but something of a far lower standard. Please refrain from unfounded and baseless claims.

Be useful to your country instead of created hatred. You are creating ve GDP, nothing worse.

Vietnam is not the 2nd largest coffee producer anymore. Why because they Learnt that there is not enough $$$, so they pulled out 1/4 of their coffee crops. Why don't you learn this instead. You sound like those left wing nut groups that accuse everything else except see the reality for what it is TOO much supply not enough demand. Means get out of coffee farming and diversify in other jobs. Vietnam understands this, why can't you and those organizations. Yes Ferenji organizations mostly.

Ethiopians in ruined border town criticise ruling

28 Nov 2004 09:03:15 GMT

Source: Reuters

By Katie Nguyen

ZALAMBESSA, Ethiopia, Nov 28 (Reuters) - The residents of Zalambessa, a mountain town that was gutted during the two-year border war between Ethiopia and Eritrea, want peace more than anything.

But they say an independent commission's ruling, giving a key town on the disputed frontier to former enemy Eritrea, does no justice to the victims of a conflict that killed 70,000.

Living among the rubble of the 1998-2000 war, few in this remote border settlement knew the Ethiopian parliament in the capital Addis Ababa had voted on Thursday to accept in principle the ruling that cedes territory along the 1,000 km (600 mile) border to smaller Eritrea.

"We need peace. People, especially in this area, have learnt a hard lesson from war," said Hagos, a teacher. "But from what we understand the prime minister's (Meles Zenawi) speech could imply we are surrendering."

Ethiopia had previously refused to accept the April 2002 ruling by the independent Boundary Commission that the town of Badme, the main flashpoint of the war, belonged to Eritrea -- a stand that delayed a final demarcation of the border.

Opposition leaders in Addis Ababa have dismissed Meles' about-turn as an affront to the victims of the conflict, which uprooted thousands of people and featured grim trench warfare reminiscent of World War One.

Echoing views long held across the country, people in Zalambessa said they could not accept the loss of Badme.

"Personally, I cannot accept this, because Badme has always been part of Ethiopia. It is in the literature books, in the history books," said aid worker Fithawi Negash. "We lost too much blood over Badme to give it away so easily."

SLOWLY COMING BACK TO LIFE

Four years after the war ended, Zalambessa is slowly coming back to life. There is freshly laid tarmac on the main street. New brick buildings stand next to empty, broken houses that were bombarded during the fighting.

Ethiopians and Eritreans were allies in the rebellion that ousted military dictator Mengistu Haile Mariam in 1991.

Eritrea, Ethiopia's northernmost province, voted for and won independence two years later with Addis Ababa's blessing.

Many residents of Zalambessa, whose town faces the mountains of Eritrea, point out that people on both sides of the border share a language and a culture. "They are our brothers. Intermarriage used to be very common here," said teacher Hagos.

But the friendship soured when Eritrea introduced its own currency, the nakfa, in 1997 to replace the Ethiopian birr, causing economic dislocation and problems in cross-border trade.

Another bitter grievance against the Asmara government is the loss to Eritrea of two strategic Red Sea ports, Assab and Massawa, which has forced landlocked Ethiopia to ship its exports through Djibouti.

"Without Ethiopia, Assab is nothing," said one resident bitterly. "We can do without them, but they can't survive without us." Source

Posted: Sat Dec 11, 2004 8:36 pm Post subject: FERENJIS' INFERIORITY COMPLEX

------------------------------------------------------------------------ --------

I CAN NOT TELL YOU HOW I DESPISE FERENJIS BECAUSE AS THEIR DEEDS SHOW THEY ARE NOT WORTH OF ANY RESPECT !

what is more these people suffer from inferiority complex toward people in the horn of africa, the nubians and others.
'cause they know that they lived in caves while they were building pyramids !

what amazing is that ethiopians are very passive to attacks by ferenjis.
read everything they write about ethiopia it is full of negative attributes.
many coward diaspora ethiopians, many of them professors and phd holders try to excuse that by saying call a spade spade.
how cowardice they are !
ferenjis, the worst people ever to visit this planet, are the last to give negative attributes to others, even less to ethiopia when we consider their destructive role in the last fifty or so years.
for every negative attribute directed against us by these maddest, unhappiest and worst people on the planet we can reply with ten in return !

------------------------------------------------------------------------ --------

You know i am surprised that ethiopians are passively watching when british scums are waging anti-ethiopia campaign !
they call it the 20th anniversary of the 84 famine, etc.
guys why do we allow these trashes to do all that ?
you know what arabs did to a dutch journalist who waged anti-islam propaganda? they killed him in his own country some weeks ago.
you know you can not compare what he did to islam with what the british scums and other ferenjis are doing against ethiopia for a long time.
why are we passive ?

Ethiopia opposition slams govt border plan

ADDIS ABABA, Jan 2 (Reuters) Ethiopia's opposition has attacked a government plan to solve a border row with Eritrea, saying it would not stop what they called the wrongful loss of territory to their former foe.
Opposition leaders told a 150,000-strong rally in Addis Ababa today that a 2000 peace deal with Eritrea ''sold out'' Ethiopia's interests, and a new peace plan proposed by Prime Minister Meles Zenawi would not correct those failings.

''The five-point peace plan aims at giving away part of Ethiopia's land, which was won through the blood and sacrifices of tens of thousands of its gallant sons'', said Gebru Asrat, a former Meles ally turned opposition activist.

''The (2000) Algiers Agreement did not serve the interest of Ethiopia and its people --- it was a sell out'', he said to cheers from supporters in the capital's main Meskel Square.

"I call upon the Ethiopian people to vote the prime minister out of office": Gebru Asrat
African countries worry that tensions between the two Horn of Africa nations could trigger a new conflict, destabilising a volatile region that has been used as a base by al Qaeda in the past and that continues to suffer drought and famine.

Eritrea insists that Ethiopia accept in full a 2002 ruling by an independent boundary commission set up under a peace treaty both countries signed in Algiers on Dec. 12, 2000.

Under the treaty both countries agreed in advance to be bound by the ruling of the commission.

When the commission issued its findings in 2002 Eritrea quickly accepted its decision, which said the prized town of Badme lay in Eritrea, not in Ethiopia which currently holds it.

Ethiopia initially rejected the decision but in November finally accepted the ruling in principle.

Ethiopia's surprise announcement added, however, that Addis Ababa wanted dialogue with Asmara on how to implement the ruling in the estimated 15 percent of the border that is contentious.

Major powers are unanimous in saying reopening negotiations would go against the promise both countries made to be bound by the ruling. The European Union last month echoed Eritrea's call for Ethiopia to respect the border ruling in full.

Some diplomats in the region see Meles's five-point plan as an attempt at diverting international attention from the government's delay in complying with its treaty obligations.

His government has been on the defensive domestically ever since the border ruling was announced, because ordinary Ethiopians are outraged that a war that cost an estimated 70,000 lives on both sides could result in Ethiopia losing Badme.

Meles's plan calls for dialogue with Eritrea about the cause of the war and how to implement the border decision. It also stipulates that Ethiopia pay its dues to the boundary commission and appoint liaison officers to help it demarcate the border.

Diplomats point out much of the plan -- such as paying dues and appointing liaison officers -- restates obligations Ethiopia is already committed to perform under existing agreements.

Thousands of Ethiopians protest against premier's peace plan with Eritrea

"We have no reason to give an inch of our territory": Former President Negasso Gidada
ADDIS ABABA, Jan 2 (AFP) -- More than 50,000 people demonstrated in the Ethiopian capital on Sunday against plans by Prime Minister Meles Zenawi to kick-start the stalled peace process with neighbouring Eritrea.

The demonstration, organised by the country's opposition parties, was aimed at denying Meles's peace plan popular support ahead of general elections scheduled for May.

In November Meles offered fresh hope for a breakthrough when he finally accepted a special commission's ruling designed to resolve a border dispute that led to a two-year war in 1998 and offered a plan to push forward the process.

But since the two countries signed an accord in Algiers in 2000 to end the war hardly any progress has been made. Eritrea has also rejected the peace plan, and accused its arch-nemesis of buying time.

Opposition leaders have accused Meles of endangering Ethiopia's territorial integrity.

"We are calling on the public to pressure the government into pulling back its anti-people and anti-national integrity peace initiative," Beyene Petros, deputy chairman of the Ethiopian United Democratic Front (EUDF), told the demonstrators.

Former Ethiopian president Negaso Gidada, who left power in 2000, said: "There is no reason to accept the new initiative, which is based on the principle of give and take. We have no reason to give an inch of our territory and take an inch of Eritreans'."

He also urged the voters to throw out Meles in May polls.

"I call upon the Ethiopian people to vote the prime minister out of office and bring in a new government that will look for a new peace initiative," said Gebru Asrate, a sworn rival of the prime minister.

"Unless the basic causes of the war are identified and resolved, there cannot be any peace with a dictatorial regime of Eritrea, which considers itself a "Big Brother" in the region," said Gerbu, who fought alongside Meles in a guerrilla war that toppled the dictatorial regime of Soviet-backed Mengistu Haire Mariam in 1991.

"The new peace initiative is a plan by the prime minister to give land and terrirorial rights to the (Eritrean) government," he added, a view echoed by several opposition figures in the poverty-stricken Horn of Africa nation.

Police said between 50,000 and 60,000 people demonstrated in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, but organisers put the figure as high as 100,000.

The border between the two Africa nations has remained closed to all but UN peacekeepers, and bilateral relations have been limited to hostile declarations.

Since Ethiopia dismissed the ruling in September 2003, both states have refused to give an inch despite a desperate search by the international community for some kind of compromise.

Eritrea repeatedly took the moral high ground, insisting that Ethiopia had violated international law because the Algiers accord called for the ruling on the path of the border to be accepted as "final and binding" by both sides, and rebuffed appeals for dialogue and UN mediation.

Ethiopia justified its rejection by claiming the ruling violated other provisions of the peace accord concerning demographics and that the flashpoint town of Badme, which the commission attributed to Eritrea, had long been administered by Addis Ababa.

RE: MEDREK/ETHIOINDEX ARE E P R P RUN

I WONDER WHY PEOPLE MAKE TOO MUCH NOISE ABOUT THAT BARREN LAND CALLED ERITREA ?

IS THAT BECAUSE THE PEOPLE WHO RUN THIS SITE/FORUM ARE MIDDLEMEN TO EPRP,OLF AND SHABIA(EPLF) ?
IS THE ONE WHO RUN THIS FORUM SOMEONE WHO IS MEMBER IN ALL THE ABOVE THREE ORGANIZATIONS ?

WHAT IS COMMON FOR ALL THREE PLUS FERENJIS ?
HATRED FOR ETHIOPIA ???

OTHERS FOOLED US IN THE PAST AND PLAYED US ONE AGAINST ANOTHER AND NOW WE ARE WEAK,POOR AND DIVIDED !
THOSE OTHERS ARE FERENJIS,ARABS ETC !
THEY DIVIDED US INTO MOSLEMS AND CHRISTIANS,ANGLOPHONES AND FRANCOPHONES,OROMOS AND AMARAS, MEN AND WOMEN ETC !

THEY REALLY FOOLED US AND WE ARE IN A BAD SITUATION NOW !

WE HAVE TO LEARN FROM OUR PAST !
WE SHOULD NO LONGER ALLOW FOREIGNERS TO DIVIDE US UNDER ANY CATEGORY !

WE ARE ETHIOPIANS/AFRICANS FIRST AND ANYTHING ELSE NEXT !

SO YOU AS MOSLEM SHOULD NOT HAVE SYMPHATY WITH THE AUTHOR OF THE ABOVE ANTI-ETHIOPIA COMMENT JUST BECAUSE THE AUTHOR IS MOSLEM !

YOU ARE ETHIOPIAN FIRST AND ANYTHING ELSE NEXT !
DO NOT BE FOOLED BY FOREIGNERS !
THE AUTHOR OF THAT BADLY WRITTEN AND HYPOCRITICAL COMMENT COULD BE EGYPTIAN OR ERITREAN !

AND WE ALL KNOW THAT EGYPT'S CONCERN IS WATER AND NOT PEACE OR DEVELOPMENT IN ETHIOPIA.

IT IS A JOKE TO HEAR SOME PROUDLY SAYING THAT THEY HAVE A FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION IN AMERICA !

IF SO WHY DONT THEY CRITICIZE THE SAME GOVERNMENT MAINLY RESPONSIBLE TO MANY OF OUR PROBLEMS IF THAT IS AIDS,FAMINE(IMAGINE NONE TELL THAT USA HAS DECIDED TO STAND ALONGSIDE EGYPT SHOULD A WAR BREAK OUT BETWEEN IT AND ETHIOPIA),DISTABILITY !

THIS MOTHER OF ALL ETHIOPIA'S PROBLEMS IS NOT CRITICIZED AT ALL, QUITE THE CONTRARY MANY DIASPORA ETHIOPIANS SPEAK GOOD WORDS ABOUT THIS ETHIOPIA ENEMY ANY TIME THEY HAVE AN OPPORTUNITY FOR THAT !

THEY ALSO DO NOT PROTEST WHEN ETHIOPIANS AT HOME ARE EXPOSED TO AMERICAN PROPAGANDA THROUGH VOA !

SO I TOUCHED YOUR NERVES I GUESS !

DO YOU THINK THAT CRITICIZING AMERICA,BRITAIN AND GERMANY WOULD BE BAD FOR ETHIOPIA ?

WHAT DO THEY THINK ABOUT DIASPORA ETHIOPIANS ?

THEY THINK:
"DIASPORA ETHIOPIANS ARE SO COWARD THAT THEY EVEN HAVE NOT THE GUT TO CRITICIZE US(AMERICA).
WHAT WE NEED TO DO TO CONTROL THE RISE OF AN OPPOSITION FORCE IN ETHIOPIA IS TO GIVE VISAS FOR THE GIFTED ONES.
THE MOMENT THEY ARRIVE IN AMERICA THEY WOULD BE NEUTRALIZED AND CAN NO LONGER POSE A DANGER TO US AND MELES."
