What Ever Happened To Candied Apples?

They're much healthier, taste better, and are totally juicier than what an average Joe would consider 'candy.' I enjoyed them as a child. What happened to them? Where did they go? Wherever they went, I'd like to know the lucky bastard who has them all hidden away for himself! :-D

they still sell them at the stop and shop where i live (north jersey). they sell them in caramel and in red candy jelly stuff. also, they sell kits with sticks and this powder stuff to make the hard candy outside kind. my husband and i made some this year, and they tasted just like the kind you'd get at fairs or whatnot. here is the url of what the box looks like, etc. http://www.concordfoods.com/apple.html

they're really easy to make, especially if you have a candy thermometer, which they sell for cheap, usually, at any shop rite or stop n shop. they still had a whole bunch of the kits left as of sat. night at the stop n shop near us, and the best thing of all, the kits only cost $0.99, and they make enough candy stuff for 12 apples:)

They suck if the candy is too hard, though! I had one a couple years ago and I ended up throwing it away! I don't think I had ever had one before. I had always just had caramel apples, which does sound pretty good right now!

The reason people don't give them out anymore - RAZOR BLADES!!! Remember that? It could have been an urban legend, but that was certainly the demise of popcorn balls and caramel apples at Halloween!

RE: What Ever Happened To Candied Apples?

the grocery stores near me had caramel apple kits, too. just in case anyone was looking for those. concord foods makes a kit for that, too.

i think ppl don't give them out anymore because they're too expensive. we get like, at least 30-100 kids every year trick-or-treating, and 100 candy apples would be nuts.

i'm pretty sure that urban legend was for apple bobbing. the legend is that someone put the blades in an apple, someone bobbed for it, and owwy. however, i think apple bobbing's demise was germs and just being plain gross;) when i was younger, the new game was to hang apples or marshmallows off a clothesline, and people had to try to eat them as fast as they could, instead of the bobbing. much more sanitary, heh.

The unwritten rule now is that it has to be packaged in an individual wrapper, so that is another reason you wouldn't give something out like that!

yea. and even the ones that you can buy already-made at shop rite or whatever, can be easily opened and closed again and have no seal. thus, i think ppl know better than to give them out.

GUW is right about two things:
One being that razors in candied apples is pure uban legend, except for one incident involving a child's own RELATIVES who made a failed attempt to poison the child to death via caramel apple.
Two: I forgot about the packaged rule! Thanks for the reminder!

sounds like a handy cover up in case you ever want to kill your kids.

RE: What Ever Happened To Candied Apples?

I used to always feel sorry for the old ladies where I grew up that would give stuff unwrapped to us, like popcorn balls, because I knew my mom, and about a hundred other parents whose kids got the same things were going to make us throw them away, after they'd spent the time to make them, even though most likely they were fine. I always used to wish that someone would tell them that giving out unwrapped goodies wasn't the thing anymore.

I talked to an older lady today that told me that she had made popcorn balls, caramel apples and cupcakes! I was like, damn, you can still give that to people in your little ass town? LOL She proceeded to tell me that she has all of the kids of the kids that grew up with her kids come over for a big celebration at her house.

and she left out the part about how she poisoned the punch and buried them all in the back yard.
