Balance

I beleive that a RPG should be difficult, forcing you to take time to train and the like, but I beleive that if you are going to get something that makes life easier, it should be hard to get.
For example, FF6. It was rather hard to go right through and beat the game, but if you took the time to get things like the Economizer, Gem Box, Offering, and the Paladin Shield, it became a lot easier, and those are hard to get if you don't know where your looking. I beleive that more games should include these elements.

Disagree with the Diablo point

I have to disagree about the diablo point. Diablo 1 was pretty easy to me, and Diablo 2 was just a tad bit harder. This, of course, is just my opinion on the subject.
About the subject at hand, I do believe that rpgs are getting basicly easier. In Final Fantasy VI you could only summon a guy once per battle. In VIII you could boost their power and repetedly summon them, making battles not too hard. I never played IX so I can't comment on that one, and in X you could have the summon stay and fight for you. Eventually, you don't even need to use Anima's overdrive, because he does 99,999 with regular hits.

Well...

I don't really know much on the topic, since the only RPGs I have are the Final Fantasies before PS2, and Earthbound. They're all great. But the Final Fantasies intended for the Playstation, as in 7-9 were VERY easy, or at least easier than the others. Yeah, in FFI it's INCREDIBLY important to train early on, and train in the middle, and near the end, etc. etc. To a lesser point it stayed that way FFII-FFVI. But say, FFIX, I'm awful at RPGs (not so much awful as I prefer learning more about the game, experimenting, exploring, etc.) and that was the first Final Fantasy I beat.

Yep

new RPGs are much easier

take the difference between diablo 1 and 2 as another example

Diablo 1 was a really nice challenge (if you didnt hack) and normal mode on Diablo was at least as hard as nightmare mode on Diablo 2.

I also wish games would go back to random monsters posing some kind of threat, even D&D has been corrupted when they took away the 1 HP per level after 10th thingy from 2nd edition, 3e isnt even very fun after 10th level (well, not as fun as previous versions where you were still in danger of 1 hit kills)

Another thing people havent thought of in most recent games is a limit to leveling up. They need to put something like decreasing experience for monsters much weaker than you so that people wont just stay in one place until they are L100 or whatever.

FF1 was great, at the start you could barely stand 2 random battles without returning to town and thats probably the right balance.

Well...

I've noticed that RPG's are just getting similar and we've kind of had practice playing them, so the RPG will just have to innovate in some way or just balance it so the odds are really against you a lot.

Is easier games a bad thing?

I agree that some games are getting easier but is this a problem.
I know that many RPG's are easier than before but this could be due to me growing older (and wiser), and some games of the past where too hard, for example star ocean 2 and saga frontier 2.
I find that easier RPG's are not a bad thing as they are easier to get into and less frustrating.

harder/easier

Well, the answer to this question lies in the hands of the designer. Xenosaga was kinda hard. FFX was a little hard. It all depends on the designer. in my opinion rpgs should be the hardest games on the market. I want a game that is so hard it scares away buyers. I want a game that's 5 nothes harder than Star ocean 2 and FF Tactics(playstation, the GBA version is way too easy!!!) Things should never get easier. they should always get harder. Maybe I feel this way becuase I love the impossible.

Your Skills

I think one thing you have to consider is that with time, the average RPG gamer learns the tactics that they need to employ in order to be successful at RPGs. When I first played Dragon Warrior, I didn't know that the shrine at Tantagel refilled your MP for free, and I didn't use my magic because I though I needed to save it for a rainy day (granted, I was only seven at the time). So buying new equiment, and leveling up, took me a really long time. Much of the challenge comes from our own experiences in life, and whether or not we have the tactical knowledge to be successful.

Harder Games

Well, I'm finding most new games harder, but I think it's due to poor game design. It used to be that, by the time you reached a Boss, your characters had been strengthened enough by the battles that they had a good chance to beat it. These days, I find myself leveling up JUST to beat a Boss! C'mon, that's OK for hidden Bosses, but not regular ones!

Much easier

I think the last of the truly hard RPGs was 7th Saga for the SNES. After that, nobody ever wanted to deal with hard normal enemies anymore. I kinda don't blame them, given that game's reputation.

From then on, your average overworld-roaming monster is designed to not even be a threat unless you're way below recommended level for that area. Only "special" random monsters (Pug [aka Tonberry] from FF3/6, Metal slime-family in the Dragon Quest/Warrior series, etc.) are designed to pose any difficulty in wiping out.

I am just better now!

I sucked back in the old NES days so games where like really hard, the SNES games where easyer as I got better.
and now I can win a game in about 3 days with low levels.

Games are not easyer, I am just better.

Definitely Easier

Does anybody remember when status effects really posed a threat? I remember in FF1, cursing because one of my characters had just been poisoned. Not only did poison stay after battle, it was hard to heal! Now, the closest thing I've seen recently is in Xenosaga, when you're at Pleroma with Ziggy. I got posioned, and I figured that well, if I killed the guy the poison wouldn't deal damage. Well, it did and I died.

Much easier

In NES RPGs, you went into battle as (estimated) equals to the monsters. Now, you go into battle capapble of wiping out an entire dungeon with barely any healing.
The new ones are longer, not harder.
