Uh...

I don't know. I've always considered that to be sort of a silly assumption to make, especially since some religions don't even require any donations or anything and may not even have a specific belief in a deity. As far as controlling actions goes, the fact is, a code of conduct is all that keeps some human beings from murdering each other for their own benefit. Going by the idea that it's all about control, you could say the same thing about law. Should we ignore acts such as murder? Society could very well fall apart if that happened. One doesn't have to believe in a deity to have morals.

Religion has always been a means to explain that which science has always failed to (and will most likely continue to). Also, how can one say that someone shouldn't believe that their religion is right, when by believing that no religion is (out of all the many, many religious views out there) is just as unlikely. The way I see it, you can believe in nothing if you like, but if you're right, it doesn't matter, and if you're wrong, it could.

Besides, the point of Breath of Fire II was not that religion was about control and was evil. The religion of the Dragon God (which was reminiscent of the older religion of Shinto) was presented as being a true religion and only the religion of St Eva was portrayed as being false. Personally, I think the game was done that way because some earlier Japanese experiences with monotheism were less than positive, and the implication was that the old beliefs are best.

Oh, well... Maybe I'm just crazy...

Religion on rpg´s

I believe that the religion in Breath of Fire II suits this case very well. Religion is only an method created by the church to manipulate people´s minds, lives and pockets. At least, that´s what i think... and there are questions that no one can answer, nor a priest, nor the papa, so i can´t see why people tends to believe that exist someone stronger than anyone in the world. For me, this is just a way to try to forget your problems, and throw everything into god. Hey, don´t care about the gramatical errors, i´m brazilian, and i don´t speak english very well. But you guys are doing a great work! Keep it up! Well, adiós folks! Till another poll!

Atheism

Atheist gmaes add an interesting aspect to gaming. Priest power would need a different source of power. Aliens some other kind of "divine intervention"? Some othe runkown source. The possibilities are endless.

Fantasy = Fantasy

Since RPGs are usually fantasy, and you also believe that religion isn't real, why would you want an athiest game?

Religion in RPGs

In FFX the whole thing about Yevon was something to give people hope, like the real world, then later through the story after they started to question what to believe in. In the old days when someone questioned their religion they were punished. They mostly put religion in RPGs to have a base idea on the what the game is based on, but they dont make it a major part because then Rights Groups would get involved and it'll make a big mess.

Religion in RPGs

This is a touchy topic, and I usually avoid it, but I think it's Ok to talk about it here (rather than in an MB thread.)
Does any RPG religion resemble my beliefs? Well, as a non-aligned Christian (that is, not a member of any formal Church) those games with Christianity-knock offs would qualify.
However, as others pointed out, most religions in RPGs tend to be just a story gimmick, usually to hide a menace. I suspect this reflects the lack of trust on religion the public seems to suffer from these days. (To be fair, many religions, including Christianity, were used to justify cruel events at certain points in history- like the Inquisition.)
It must be noted that religion (and/or philosophy) are sometimes used in RPGs to explore more complicated subjects, like the meaning of Life. Xenogears (and its prequel, Xenosaga) seem to be an example.

My opinion

I'd say the Ark of Destiny from Wild Arms 3. The leader (Lamium) says that he follows the road to enlightenment by living a good and pure life; being good to others, doing what's right, etc. However, he also believes that things like technology, financial success and other material things are important for happiness as well. His goal is to do as well as he can in a status-seeking world, but at the same time being a genuinely good human being.

Christianity

I'll admit it. I'm a Christian, I was born and raised in the same denomination that my uncle and grandfather are both pastors. I've found some games to have some religeons that are almost synonymous to Christianity, i.e. Breath of Fire 2 and the worshippers of St. Eva, however I, and my brethren, do most definitely not unknowingly worship a demon bent on destroying all of creation. I think there are times when some of the creators of games are trying to make comments on the religeons of our world today, and to that I say, "KNOCK IT OFF!" Let the theologians work that out, just make games that we can enjoy. Now I am in no way saying that religeon should not be in games. I think it often gives a depth to the game that it would definitely lack on a sociological level. It is this that makes a game interesting. Studying the different cultures and learning about their practices and beliefs. That is what religeons in games like Final Fantasy X have done. They've added another facet to a game making it that much more complex and that much more enticing and interesting to the gamer.
