Sceptical or closed minded?

It is easy to reject concepts or ideas that are not very well understood, and in fact, science has led the human race to reject things that we now accept.

This is not to say Nostradamus is one of them, although I believe there is some merit in what he has done, but I feel that some of the skepticism surrounding Nostradamus goes beyond what can be called skepticism and into the realm of closed mindedness and asinine mindsets.

I read your article, and see that you attack in your examples not the people who made the claims, but the texts themselves... for all we know, there are mis-representations of writings all the time, and Nostradamus is no exception.

as for the rest of the article, I find it nothing more than rambling on and on - opinions that repeat themselves, and claims that are debatable and not definitive as well. I might not debate the vagueness in some of the quatrains, but I actually can see specifics in some of them - coming from a mind that likes reading a lot, and reading into things that actually take reading to understand.

" But just take on board that if you vote "Yes" then what you are really saying is that the future has already been determined. This would mean we have no free will, no choice of actions, because what will be will be. In that case we may as well all stay in bed!"

I voted "yes" to the poll, and think this is a very pessimistic and very black/white view of it, if in fact we can predict the future, that in my opinion does not mean that we can't change it, just that this is what was coming for us, giving us time to change it if we want to, or leave it for our fate.

Not everything makes sense, not everything is easily comprehendable - or comprehendable to boot, but I feel you are just jumping on the bandwagon of those who tackle on a lack of understanding, or a lack of will to try and see anything other than what is already known - the realm of what is unknown that is.

RE: Sceptical or closed minded?

You said you voted 'yes' to the poll 'Can the future be predicted?'. You then carry on to say that "if in fact we can predict the future, that in my opinion does not mean that we can't change it". I'm sorry but this is where you lost me, if the future can be predicted it cannot change. If the future really can be predicted and we can all change it then the future can't be predicted as you have know idea what other people will do to change the future. Your 6th paragraph makes no sense at all. I think you should of voted 'Don't know'.

RE: Sceptical or closed minded?

It is well known that Nostradamus predicted that the US would fake the moon landings. He also predicted that I would win a free laptop....and I did! If that ain't proof enough for me, then I'll be hornswoggled.

RE: Sceptical or closed minded?

I would agree with Grant on what he said about Tson's first post. If you can predict the future then you can't change it becuase if you could change it then that future that you predicted therefore wouldn't be the future.(Think about that) Maybe you have to define your future for us first because it is possible that we share different definitions. ?:) I'm trying not to be close minded like you say, but its hard to think of an exchangable future (One we can change) as you posted here: "if in fact we can predict the future, in my opinion, that does not mean we can't change it, just that this is what was coming for us, giving us time to change it if we want to..." On the other hand what if one could in fact predict the "future" and be able to change its destiny.(Think outside the box for a minute). What would you have to do to keep the future you foresaw? Would you have to not think about it? Not do anything out of the ordinary to keep that prediction attainable? To change it would you have to do anything you could to avoid what you foresaw? As you can see this "future" that you speak of brings up a lot of questions that really no one can answer. Also, this "future" should really be given a different name, maybe something like "Uncertain foreshadowing" or maybe you have a better name. :p
Furthermore, when it comes to fate and religion and whether or not there is a God that has mapped out our futures for us, then I would say absolutely positively No Way Ho Zay. I don't want to get too deep into it, so I'll just say that when I was younger and I attended CCD classes (as a catholic) they would teach me that God lets us make choices. He gave us the gift of free choice, meaning we make the decisions that determine whether or not we end up in Heaven or Hell. But, however, as Keith already wrote, this brings up questions such as what about the people who are mentally ill and commit crimes, but have no true awareness of them. Also, questions like where does God draw the line as to "good enough for heaven"? Is there a point system? Maybe its random. Who knows.
What I do know is I voted "No" to this poll, and truely feel that if the future can be predicted then it is known that I was gonna type this whole response. And if that is already known then absolutely nothing would matter and I would go on a crazy spree of debauchery simply because of the belief I had - that everything is already determined. Moreover, in my own mind I would have no guilt because I would believe that it was my fate and I had no control. Therefore, I feel like believing that there is fate can actually be somewhat dangerous.
Lastly, to be honest I would say that if you really do believe that the future is predicted then I'd rather share your beliefs, simply because if you beleive that the future can be predicted then chances are you beleive there is a God, who mapped out our lives, and our life now is just a beginning. Having the belief that there is a heaven is price-less and I envy anyone who really and truely can beleive that.
-Thanks for reading and any further replies will be fun to read and re-respond to.

RE: Sceptical or closed minded?

I beleive that everyone here beleive that teh universe is made of matter and energy or every type of matter and energy.

Now think about it, if anyof you ever done a chemistry experiment. Add chemical a with chemical b while brething chemicl c and heating chemical d MAKES BIG BOOM!
If this is true and even scientists have comfirmed this is that if you knew every part of the universe every corner every inch every piece of matter and every joule of energy like a big chemistry experiment the same thing will happen all the time.

UNLESS!!!

if an external element was introduced and had the ability to change things... kinda like my hand In teh chemistry experiment my hand can stop teh boom eitehr by adding chemcial z or just plain puttin my hand in teh flask.
