People with too much time on their hands will argue that LotR is an allegory for WWII, but Tolkien specifically said he hated allegory, so it's not likely.

I have never heard that LOTR was an allegory for WWII... I have read a bunch of evidence saying that Lewis Carol actually wasnt on Opium when he wrote wonderland, and that that was in fact a political satire... but not all of the wierd **** in that has been decyphered.
