Okay, okay, I'm considering buying the game, but from aside whether the game sucks because it breaks tradition or besides the fact that it should be called final fantasy online and not fantasy 11, no one has actually stated that the game sucks because the gameplay actually sucks.
If the game was not final fantasy and had some other name and if ff11 didn't have all the other final fantasies to live up to, would it be a decent game?

The competition will fall

Final Fantasy 11 will kill all other MMORPGS(INCLUDING THAT EVERQUEST(WHICH SUCKS)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)then it will be around fo years and years and years years to come so they and they will also probly reduce the monthly fee the competetion falls so you dont have to complain about price.

Future of FF

When you think about it, what else is there for the Final Fantasy name to accomplish? It's done pretty much everything you could expect a video game franchise to do. The next step, of course, would be to make it an MMORPG. I mean, what else can it do? The only alternative would be to re-hash past experiments and ideas, which can get pretty stale.

Going online is the obvious next step for Final Fantasy, and whether you think FF 11 sucks or not, you've got to admit that it's the only course fo action left.

Okay, I'm done being philosophical for today. :D

Final Fantasy should be kept to a single console at a time game. Forget this MMORPG stuff. For one, the game is dependant on Squareenix servers. In a few years, when the subscriber base dies off, they'll shut them down and no one will be able to play the game anymore. If I wanted to play a Final Fantasy game once, I'd rent it. I buy it so I can play it again years from now.

Online games and payment...

The idea that no one should have to pay for online games, especially MMOGs which have percistant worlds, is a bit naive. The fact is that you have to pay the salaries of the GMs, the people who maintain the servers, the people who do the patching and adding content that don't appear in expansions, as well as paying other server maintainence costs. Games like Diablo, Unreal Tournament, and various MUDs don't have to worry as much since they are privately owned servers and don't get the same kind of traffic.
Now as far as FFXI goes, I enjoy the game very much and has held my attention better than EQ ever did. I agree that it should just be called Final Fantasy Online, but que sera sera. The conquest system is very interesting, especially on the servers where the each nation has roughly the same number of players, and the missions offer an intriguing storyline that can be accessed by any player no matter when they join, which other MMORPGs are missing. As to if I will stick with it, that depends on how the PVP stuff that's supposed to be added in at some point works out. If it is voluntairy then I'll probably stick with it. If not, then I'll not hesitate to cancel my subscription.

hmmm...

First off i would like to say that no one should have to pay for online games that you have to buy from the store that is just a rip-off.
Second off the graphics look amazing on this game but it is just like FF: The Spirits Within the graphics are great but Final Fantasy is a story orented Game so they should not name it FFXI just name it FF Online as was said before.

I think it's good...

I'm all up for tradition and everything. But Change can be good, and in this case, it is. I saw a play once that asked the question 'Weren't traditions once new ideas?' (I don't see anyone griping about the god-awful FF2) There aren't manyy FF's that are 'normal' get EXP and level up a character who has certain abilities.
FF1: no character back story, and could choose your own characters
FF2: didn't have EXP, didn't have levels, stats could actually go DOWN if you didn't use the corresponding action
FF3: choose character class, otherwise all characters identical
FF4: wow, the first 'normal' FF. Level a character and use the characters for thier abilities
FF5: Like 3, choose a job for your characters. otherwise almost identical.
FF6: another normal one like 4
FF7: almost normal. You level with EXP, but all the characters are near Identical except for materia and limits.
FF8: quasi normal, like 7. almost like 6 where you only get good stats if you have magic junctioned (in 6 you needed an esper equiped)
FF9: normal, like 4 and 6.
FF10: I don't know what to call it, closest to quasi-normal. with the sphere grid and all, not sure where to put it.
FF10-2: haven't played it yet.
FF11: MMORPG
so as you can see, only 4, 6, and 9 are 'normal'. even if you count 7 and 8, that's less then half.
side-note: my only gripe about FF11 is the lack of character models.

What did they do with FF!?!

It all started After FF7 the last of the good ones. From FF8 and on it all seemed to diminish into thin air.
The Japs ****ed up big time, god DAMIT those little penis wing wang wongers. I saw the FF10-2 commercial on TV in Canada and said WTF WTF are they doing to good old FF it looks more like a promotion to a Brittany Spears CD. And for that reason I would cut the Japs little cocks off those little ****ers. Never has something so great fell ( well they have fell from greatness to zero ) but Squaresoft has managed to fall from something amazingly revolutionary ( Oh yeah am talking about FF2,3 and CT )to -1923641034092 a **** load of crap.

First of all, FF11 sucks. Period. It, along with FFX-2, break the traditions of FF, & therefore suck. They must all be destroyed. I want to go & kill Squeenix & their insolent selves for that stupid infraction on the glory that is FF. Think about it? Does it not break tradition to have FF online? Yes. Breaking a good tradition that has been working for the past 17 years to make a ****ty MMORPG that isn't as GOOD as RO & make you pay for it is damn insanity! Now for FFX-2, it is a disgrace, have you seen an FF sequel? No. FFX-2 may have pretty music...but it's an atrocity to all that is FF. I want to kill & destroy all the people who play & all the copies of both games.

Dude, Thats Wrong

The whole point in the Final Fantasy games was to have a deep plot, it's what set them apart from Dragon Warrior and all the rest in the first place. So by going online, Square is taking away the whole point of Final Fantasy. This game would have been fine if it was released as Final Fantasy Online, or something like that, but the 'core' Final Fantasies should always be a single player experience. (And I can't afford 9$ a month;)

Other...

I don't like this game. But, I wouldn't say I don't like it at all. The game is pretty amazing :O It's got a lot of stuff to do and places to go and explore, the graphics are top notch for MMORPGs, the music is pretty good, even the people are nice. It's a great environment. But, it fails in its combat system. Sure, it is much like most MMORPGs, but that's why I don't like most MMORPGs either :P The problem is, it seems to emphasize sitting around and waiting a lot more than I'd like to. It's very boring in the beginning, and since the basics of it won't suddenly get more engaging, it's just tough to enjoy for me. If FF11 had a more active combat system, like, say, Phantasy Star Online, it would be the best MMORPG, hands down. But, it fails miserably in the most crucial part. Why PLAY a GAME if you don't ENJOY it, I always say. :P Sorry, FF11.
