Customizability

I like RPGs for many reasons, but mainly for the STORY; and as noted, you usually have to have pre-stablished characters for a game to have a good story. However, I certainly enjoy having the ability to create my own characters; it is more fulfilling AND it adds replay value. I guess the best games, then, are the ones that have preset characters but with good customizability options.

I like both

I like them equally as much. If they are preset characters, you get a MUCH better storyline. However, customized characters do add a little bit of that 'role playing' back into RPGs.

"I have to disagree with the previous statement, becuase there can be great history of the characters in custimizable parties. A great example would be Seiken Densetsu III. You can chose your party from six different classes, and yet they all haver they're own unique story."

I think you're missing the point of the question. While that may be a customizable party it doesn't mean you get to create your team. You can't, for instance, have a Beastman as a Duelist, since he already has a decided class. The question is more in regards to parties like Final Fantasy I and III, where you were given four characters who had absolutely no background, you named them, you decided whether they were going to be a fighter, wizard, etc. and then you played as them. In Seiken Densetsu 3, you choose three out of six characters with established backgrounds, allies, enemies and classes which is alot like your average SaGa game(you choose the main character and get whoever you want/can as your allies).

Either one's great.

Well, customized characters kills most character development, but hey, it's customized, so they can be whoever you want. Uncustomized characters are good too, in my opinion. I can play either one, though, easily.

It's more fun...

...when the characters are created so they are like I want.

Developing characters

Also, you often get standard comments, eg the calm wizard yelling "Die you scum!" in the one male voice. When there's more development fair enough, but some not-quite-RPG disasters like Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance? Give me strength.

Only if....

... you can make future changes (ie FFV). The problem I have with FFI specifically is if you choose a party that is fantastic in the begginning of the game great, but later you may realize the party actually stinks in the final dungeons (so... you either suffer through the end of the game or start over, there is no option to "change" classes or improve them).

Youknow i'm right

no because if the game is based on a party that you created (choosing man/woman/class) there is absolutely no history about the characters (would the background story for the 4 whitemages from FFI the same as the 4 fighters or 4 blackmages?)
However... thhere is always the games where you can just choose the class of your main character but the story remains unchanged (ogre battle at least changes the stats and class...)
