Umm...

I the merit of games based on gameplay and story, not on whether or not they have pre-established characters.

Super Mario RPG is one of the more entertaining (if excessively easy) games I've ever played, for example, but I could see other examples where it went horribly, horribly wrong *coughPaperMariocough*.

If it rocks

The folks that wrote before me had it right; if it is a good game, it doesn't really matter who is in it.

Only if they are good.

If an RPG rocks, then it doesn't matter who the characters are.

The Question

As long as its a good RPG, go for it! Need I bring up Super Mario RPG?

They're mostly the same as other RPGs.

I really just like to play an RPG every once in a while; it doesn't really matter who the characters are, as long as it isn't too outrageous. I thought Paper Mario and Super Mario RPG were both great, and not just because they featured Mario (I, in fact, do have a biased opinion because I love the Super Mario Games anyway). That doesn't necessarily mean that I would not enjoy playing an RPG featuring its own characters.

What Pink Lugia said...

I don't really care about the main character.

What makes or breaks a RPG is mostly the plot, not that the character came from another game.

good games

I realy don't care who the characters are, as long as the game is okay. The only time I care Is if I'm in the mood for a great story in a game. Then I need more fleshed outy characters then simple plumbers
