Newfane Security

I have had two children graduate from Newfane, and currently have one at NECC and one at the Elementary school. I have never felt that my children were anything but safe at school.

Who let the dogs out?

I think it's interesting that a bunch of Newfane students ... who couldn't listen to my show due to their schedule ... find themselves voting in this poll. Were they told or directed to by teachers or board members? I also think its interesting that a few have taken it upon themselves to attempt to hijack the results of this poll. Apparently, the ethics class went with the austerity budget ... or so a few would have us believe. This poll is open to all ... but if you can't be honest, then are you truly being true to your school?

Follow-Up

Correction:
The last sentence was supposed to be "Man that's sad." At least I'm not afraid to admit when I'm wrong. Maybe you should follow my example, and admit when you have committed some wrong-doing. For once, maybe a 20 year old has more insight than a pompous moron like you. Wow and I am the end result of the Newfane School System. I grew up when the elementary school was less secured and when the first Bush declared was with Iraq (Desert Storm). Wow, that's sad that I am more intelligent and wise than my elders.

----> Comment from SCOTT: Hey Bridget, I think you're mildly confused. This isn't Mark Lindsay's poll. So I'm not sure who you're talking to when you say "you." If you check the web address, it's ScottLeffler.com. And your maturity is evident.

Security @ NHS is TOP

I recently graduated from Newfane 2 years ago and I currently am doing my observation hours there. I had the chance to work in any school that I wished to, BUT I chose Newfane. I think that security at Newfane is great. I too agree with a previous comment that was made. I have spoken with my roommates about their high school experiences. They felt as if their high schools were too much like jails and less like high schools. As I attended Newfane and currently, Newfane feels like a school. Granite, since I have graduated teachers now wear I.D. tags which seems ridiculous because Newfane is a small town where the community, school, etc. knows everyone and has grown up with everyone. I feel as if security doesn't have to be on the highest level as compared to Lockport schools. For one, Newfane is so much smaller school. Everyone knows everyone. Newfane is in its own little nook. Finally, the students at Newfane are outstanding. They rarely fight and if one occurs, the staff handles it professionally. The officer, Vice Principal, and Principal who walk the halls and know every student by name are very responsible. Can Lockport's Principal say that they know every student of theirs from the freshman to the seniors, even those that have graduated one year prior to them being principal in a new district? Mr. Berley met me the summer that he was hired, that previous June I had graduated. When I started my observation hours, which is two years post-first meeting, he still remembered me by my name. I think don't think Lockport's principal, vice principal, or staff member could do that. I think the issue should be how you guys are handling this issue. Right now, you all are acting worse than some kindergarteners that I have worked with. Instead of looking at the area that you are dealing with, you are just whining about it. We are just treating you like any other person. Just because you are a reporter, doesn't mean anything. Your experiment was to see what a school system would do if a stranger entered the building, now you have. Like I tell some of my students, you have to think of all possible consequences to your actions and face them if they occur. Face it, you were doing an experiment and it failed and now you have to "take it like a man" and deal with it. Maybe if you would have gotten clearance secretly from the superintendent and done it, this would have ended differently. I also have to add one more thing. I and many of my friends have visited and revisited this site many times and it seems odd that your numbers keep on changing. If you really want to see a true vote, maybe you should be "man" enough and let the truth come out. You were in the wrong. One more thing, if our district is so bad, than why have we in recent years earn "excellent school" awards? Why does our district keep on growing every year? People obviously see something that they like about it. Why try to destroy something that works for this district? I am sensing some jealousy on your part. Our rivals, Wilson Central Schools are better than the grimy reporter from "Useless Scum and Junk." When you are calling Newfane petty, are you looking into a mirror? I am a product of Newfane, and I have experienced the ammonia spells, bomb threats, and the anthrax threat when I was a freshman; the faculty and staff seemed to handle those situations appropriately, and I think that they are handling your stupidity just fine. KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK NEWFANE!!! I hope one day that I am apart of their team of teachers, so as of right now, you are actually criticizing me; I don't take insults too well... I FIGHT BACK!!! Newfane is like family to me, I don't let my family get walked all over on, and I defend them. Maybe if you would have had the chance to have attended such a great school like Newfane you might see it differently. Newfane isn't like any other schools with all of the cliques. Yeah, sure we have them, but also we have school pride, which seems to be a lost tradition in schools today and in addition, EVERYONE gets along. I am not lying when I say that. What other kid this day and age has the chance to say when they graduated, they knew and hung out with everyone in their school? I know people at Lockport, and they can't even tell me all of the names of those that they graduated with!!! That's sad. Yeah, sure security is an issue, especially with the War on Iraq, and the divorces, and the whole "Columbine" issue that happened 5 years ago. But we have schools to educate "the future leaders of America." The real feature of your experiment should have been what is the quality of our local schools education? Are the kids receiving an education that they can be proud of? I am going to leave you with these last words, YOU started it, I'M going to finish it!!! NEWFANE KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK!!! Therefore, "big bad reporter guy from a middle of nowhere newspaper company," I have some lasting words for you and your entire reporter friends there at your office, TAKE IT LIKE A MAN!!! If you mess with Newfane, take what you've brought onto yourself. Your first mistake was trespassing, second, was slander, third, was getting me involved!!! In my opinion, I think that you are wasting you time on this poll; instead, I think that you should call up your accountant. Why you asked? You wasted a bunch of money on your education to pursue a career in journalism. Your whole career is based on writing and proper grammar skills, but it appears that you can't even used modern technology (WITH SPELL CHECK) to write. Man that's said.

Unethical???? Follow-up

To let the public know the results of the poll were:

VOTES

Yes: 17

No: 43

Dont Care: 1

----> Comment from SCOTT: The poll was tweaked ... I removed votes cast from identical IP addresses to reflect the "one vote - one person" philosophy. And overtly rude or crass comments WILL be deleted. BTW, trying to get more than one vote in the poll ... IMHO ... is more than a little unethical.

Unethical?!?!?!? or Mistake ?!?!?!?

Toying with this poll to reflect a desired outcome will surely be noticed, reported and protested - - I can understand the editing of some of the poor comments however unless you reset the poll as it was, 70% NO, 28% Yes, 2% Dont Care - - You will Have about 50 angry citizens calling your station tomorrow -- Best of Luck in deciding the future of your carear.

Newfane

I am a recent grad from Newfane. I currently go to college in MI now. I talk to students in MI about their high schools and how their schools were like prisons and it just made them want to rebel more. When you tell someone that they can't do something it makes them want to do it even more just to prove you wrong. Especially at this age when they are trying to make an image of themselves and trying to find who they are. I always felt safe at Newfane High School. You will always have things going wrong, mistakes happen. The reporter might have gotten through security but does that really mean that security isn't good enough at Newfane? I always felt the security guards were where they needed to be, with the students. They more you treat Nefane as a prsion the more the students are going to react as prisoners.

Newfane School Board

I disagree with the manner in which the Newfane School Board handled the situation with the journalist. In comments by the board I have heard that the reporter was not free to wander the building as he stated in an article. In fact the board stated that the journalist was told to report to the main office but did not follow instructions. Let's look at another situation to see how effective our security is at the elementary school is; an individual enters the elementary school with the intent on harming or taking a child, he/she is told to report to the main office. Will this individual follow directions and report their business to the main office. Think about that and determine whether the journalist is guilty of a crime or has pointed out some weakness that could be solved by the school district.

Newfane

Mark Lindsay illegally entered the school and failed to follow the direction of school personnel to report to the school's main office.

In taking this action, the Board of Education believes that the reporter needs to be held to the same standard of conduct as any other person.

Good for the Board of Education!!! - At least some people still ascribes to a basic system of morals and values

I wish i could say the same for the law-breaking reporter working for the local newspaper (whose company by the way owns the paper in Lockport, Medina, NT, and NF --- Can you say a monopoly on the press?) Unfortunatly I cannot!

Newfane

I think that the law is the law. But as in most cases, there are two sides to every problem. I would like to know more about Newfane's side, because I feel that the media is showing biased material right now. I think that the community would support the arrest more if the issue on security was addressed openly. (Even if this was just stated that it is being worked on.)

Newfane School

What, is the school supposed to be a prison now? Newfane has always had a nurturing environment, becuase it's the best environment to learn in. So what are we supposed to do Mr. Reporter? Put bars on the windows, and have maximum security? I'm sure the students will respond wonderfully to that! Students need a freindly environment to work in, not some cold, unfamiliar jail cell. When the community has good roll models, (in other words, ones that don't break the law!!), a friendly environment can be possible.
